5 Tips Must Know – If You Forgot Apple ID Password

It happens to the best of us – we forget our passwords, especially for things we don’t log into on a regular basis. That’s why it is easy to forget your Apple ID Password: easy to forget, much harder to retrieve or reset. This article will show you what to do if you forget your Apple ID Password, including how to reset your password through several different methods.

Reset Apple ID Password via Apple Website

The most convenient way to retrieve a lost password is on Apple’s Website, https://iforgot.apple.com/password/verify/appleid

This approach offers two solutions to retrieving a lost password, by email or security questions.

Method 1 – Reset via Email

This is a good option if you have been using the same email address since you set up your Apple ID and have easy access to check your email from another device, such as a computer.

Step 1: Go to iforgot.apple.com either on a phone, computer or other device. Then enter your Apple ID email address in the box provided.

Step 2: Select “I need to reset my password” and hit ‘Continue’.

Step 3: Select the option “Get an Email”. Apple will send you an email to your linked Apple email account to help you reset your Apple ID password.

Method 2 – Reset via Security Questions

If you set up security questions when you first signed up with your Apple ID, this can be another option.

Step 1: Go to iforgot.apple.com either on a phone, computer or other device. Then enter your Apple ID email address in the box provided.

Step 2: Select “I need to reset my password” and hit “Continue”.

Step 3: You are provided two options – reset with email or security questions. Select “Answer Security Questions”.

Step 4: Answer the security questions you previously set-up to reset your Apple ID password.

These two methods may be convenient options for users – but only if they set up security questions previously or, if they have access to the same email address. For those who have been with Apple for a long time may have changed their email address over the years, or, if you were given your first Apple device, this email address may be your parents’, instead of your own.

While this option is convenient, it does not work for all users. You may need to find another approach to retrieve your Apple ID Password.

Reset Apple ID Password with Two-Factor Authentication

For users who do not remember their Apple ID password another option is to use ‘two-factor authentication’ to gain access. In order to use this method, users must already have two-factor authentication turned on for their Apple ID.

This way, users can easily reset their Apple ID Password using trusted devices. The trust devices must have already been established, which is done when two-factor authentication is set-up. It will not work for a new device that has not been set-up for two-factor authorization prior.

Method 1 Reset via Settings

Step 1: Go to Settings, select your profile

Step 2: Select Password and Security”

Step 3: Choose “Change Password”

Step 4: Enter your phone’s passcode, then input a new password.

Method 2 Reset via Apple ID Account Page

Step 1: Start at the Forgot Apple ID or Password page on Apple’s website and select “Forgot Apple ID or Password”.

Step 2: Enter your Apple ID and choose ‘Reset Password’.

Step 3: Select “Continue”

Step 4: Choose one of your previously verified trusted devices

Step 5: You will be provided a Recovery Key (a sequence of random letters or numbers) to put in your verified device in order to reset your password.

Step 6: Once you have verified through your trusted device, you will be prompted to create a new password.

The catch here is that if the user no longer has access to a trusted device and cannot set up a new one, two-factor authentication will not be a simple solution. Getting around two-factor authentication is possible, but it is not an easy process – it could take several days to verify a device before the user can change their Apple ID Password.

A recovery key is a secure feature, however it means that you need access to not only your trusted device, but also the 28-character recovery key. If you lose access to both of these, you may be permanently blocked from your Apple Account.

Reset Apple ID Password via Apple App

More recent versions of iPhones are compatible with the Apple Support App, which provides another method for resetting your Apple ID Password.

Method 1 Reset via Apple Support App

This is for iOS 12 or later.

You will need a friend to help you download the App in order to get started.

Step 1: Open the Apple Support App and go to “Products – More Products – Apple ID”

Step 2: Select “Forgot Apple ID Password”

Step 3: Choose “Reset Password”, then “Get Started”

Step 4: Instead of resetting the password of your friend’s phone, make sure to choose “A Different Apple ID”, then input your Apple ID in the box provided.

Step 5: Input your trusted phone number to complete authentication and follow the steps to reset your password.

Method 2 Reset via Find My iPhone App

Again, your friend or family member should download the app in order to assist you.

Step 1: Start “Find my iPhone” app

Step 2: Sign out if already logged in, so that you can begin with a fresh Sign In page. The “Sign In” feature should appear.

Step 3: Ensure the space for Apple ID is left blank. If there is a name there, remove it.

Step 4: Select the option “Forgot Apple ID or Password” and follow the process.

If the users do not remember their Apple ID passcode, these two methods are relatively uncomplicated to operate. However, some drawbacks include requiring the use of a friend’s or family member’s iPhone, and downloading applications, which can claim storage space on their phone. If you don’t have access to close friends or family who own iPhones, this could present a problem.

Apple ID Account Recovery

The final method for resetting your Apple ID Password is through Account Recovery. This is a more complex and time-consuming approach, and usually a last resort. This option is sometimes chosen by users who have had their phone lost or stolen and they need to recover their account for their own security purposes. It can take a significant amount of time for Account Recovery to verify your account, so this approach is not for those in a hurry to reset their password.

Step 1: Either on Apple’s website or your device, go to “Forgot Apple ID or Password” and look for the option to “Request Account Recovery”. Select this option. Apple will then send you an email notification, and provide an estimated time when your account may be accessed again.

Step 2: You will need to wait to receive a call or text from Apple, informing you that your account is ready, so keep your phone nearby.

Step 3: You should receive contact from Apple providing you with an Account Recovery number. Keep this number and type it in the iForgot site.

Step 4: Finish resetting your password by selecting “Continue” when prompted, then sign into your account and confirm your trusted phone number, for another layer of security to your Apple Account.

This method requires information to prove that you are the owner of the Apple account, but it takes a long time and may not be suitable for users who are eager to retrieve their password. Also, to reduce delays with Account Recovery, it is a good idea to turn off any other Apple devices under your account name, until the recovery process has been completed.

Summary

There are several methods to reset your Apple ID Password if you forget it. Some require the use of an app, assistance from friends or family, or confirming trusted devices. If none of these options will work for you, you can always use LockAway to help erase your old Apple ID and create a new one.
