Can’t get enough of K-pop girl groups? We can’t either!

But which ones are the best of the best? Which tracks should you listen to? Which groups should you keep an eye on for their next release or tour?

Here are the best Kpop girl groups ever. When you’ve finished, be sure to check out these Kpop boy groups too.

BLACKPINK

Debuting in August 2016, BLACKPINK is a four member K-pop girl group consisting of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. Just as Lady Gaga has her “Little Monsters,” BLACKPINK followers are called “BLINK.”

Their current contract will expire in 2023. Fans hope the girl group will renew, but many believe they will not be returning as a four-member unit.

You may know them for some of their most popular songs, including “Ddu-du, Ddu-du,” “Kill This Love,” and “Boombayah.” Their song, “Kiss and Make Up” features Dua Lipa, and is also one of their hottest tracks.

The Netflix documentary, Blackpink: Light Up the Sky shed some light on the vulnerable, human side of its members.

Red Velvet

Red Velvet is an award-winning south Korean girl group. They originally debuted on August 1, 2014, with a four-member lineup – Seulgi, Irene, Wendy, and Joy – but added a fifth member, Yeri, in March 2015.

Some of their hottest tracks include “Feel My Rhythm,” “Psycho,” and “Queendom.”

Everglow

Everglow has been active since March 18, 2019 with a six member lineup – Mia, Onda, E:U, Sihyeon, Aisha, and Yiren.

“Dun Dun,” “Adios,” and “La Di Da” are among some of their most popular songs.

TWICE

Debuting in October 2015, TWICE is a nine-member Kpop girl group featuring Jeongyeon, Nayeon, Sana, Momo, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu. The group formed on the TV program Sixteen.

You may know them for songs like “The Feels,” “I CAN’T STOP ME” and “FANCY.”

TWICE has found considerable success internationally, in countries like Japan, UK, and beyond.

Mamamoo

Mamamoo originally formed in 2014 as a four-member K-pop girl group. The group consists of Solar, Moonbyul, Wheein, and Hwasa. Their critically acclaimed debut single, “Mr. Ambiguous,” was considered one of the best K-pop releases of 2014.

Mamamoo is well-known for their jazz, R&B, and retro stylings along with strong vocal performances on tracks like “Taller Than You,” “Um Oh Ah Yeah,” and “You’re the Best.”

EXID

Korean girl group EXID was formed in 2012 and went to hiatus in 2020. The five-member group reformed in 2022 and is still active today.

EXID is made up of Hani, Hyelin, Jeonghwa, LE, and Solji.

Fun fact – EXID is short for Exceed in Dreaming. Some of their most popular tunes include “Hot Pink,” “I Feel Good,” and “Every Night.”

ITZY

The award-winning ITZY debuted on February 12, 2019. The group consists of Lia, Yeji, Ryujin, Chaeryeong, and Yuna.

Fans love tracks like “Wannabe,” “Dalla Dalla,” and “Mafia In The Morning.”

fromis_9

fromis_9 was formed in 2017 on the reality show Idol School. The eight-member group debuted in January 2018 with the release of their first EP, To. Heart.

fromis_9 consists of the members Lee Sae-rom, Lee Chae-young, Roh Ji-sun, Song Ha-young, Lee Na-gyung, Park Ji-won, Lee Seo-yeon, and Baek Ji-heon.

As the name might suggest, the group originally consisted of nine members, but Jang Gyu-ri left the group in July 2022. Some good songs to check out include “We Go,” “Fool Good (Secret Code),” and “Dm.”

Aespa

Debuting on November 17, 2020, Aespa is still quite new to the scene. The four-member Kpop girl group is made up of Giselle, Winter, Karina, and Ningning.

The group’s name comes from two English words – “avatar” (or “aspect”) and “experience.”

Some of their best tracks include “Black Mamba,” “Next Level,” and “Savage.”

Girls’ Generation

Girls’ Generation (also known as SNSD), like fromis_9, started out as a nine-member pop ensemble. After Jessica left Girls’ Generation in September 2014, the lineup is composed of the following eight – Sunny, Tiffany, Taeyeon, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun.

Debuting on August 5, 2007, the group has a long history. Their original run lasted 10 years to 2017, but they have been active again as of 2022.

You will know for them for songs like “Gee,” “I Got A Boy,” and “Tell Me Your Wish (Genie).”

S.E.S.

S.E.S. is an acronym for Sea, Eugene, and Shoo. The three-member girl group, comprised of Bada, Eugene, and Shoo, was formed 1997 and active until 2002. They did, however, have a second run from 2016 to 2017 with their 20th anniversary project.

S.E.S. are legends of the genre, and some of their hottest tracks are “Dreams Come True,” “I’m Your Girl,” and “Paradise.”

Baby V.O.X

Their lineup may have changed through the years, but the five-member Baby V.O.X will probably be remembered best by the lineup consisting of Lee Hee-jin, Kan Mi-youn, Kim E-Z, Shim Eun-jin, and Yoon Eun-hye.

The group originally formed in 1997 and was active until 2006. Like S.E.S., they are a bit of a legend.

Songs like “Get Up,” “Killer,” and “Why” are remembered well by fans everywhere.

Girl’s Day

Girl’s Day had a nine-year run from 2010 to 2019. Minah, Sojin, Yura, and Hyeri were the remaining members for the greater part of their career, while Jisun, Jiin, and Jihae left the group between 2010 and 2012.

The group hasn’t officially disbanded, but they did not renew their contract with Dream T Entertainment in 2019.

I.O.I

Ideal of Idol, or I.O.I was formed in 2016 on the reality show Produce 101. The 11-member group had a short run from 2016 to 2017, with Kim Se-jeong, Choi Yoo-jung, Jeon So-mi, Kim Chung-ha, Zhou Jieqiong, Kim So-hye, Jung Chae-yeon, Kim Do-yeon, Kang Mi-na, Lim Na-young, and Yoo Yeon-jung.

The group has been planning a comeback, but most plans have fallen through. There was, however, a reunion live stream held in May 2021.

“Whatta Man,” “Hold On,” and “Crush” are among their best songs.

Apink

Apink started out as a seven-piece in 2011, but after Hong Yoo-kyung and Son Na-eun left, they’ve kept active as a five-piece – Yoon Bo-mi, Park Cho-rong, Kim Nam-joo, Jeong Eun-ji, and Oh Ha-young.

Some of the best tunes to check out – “My My,” “Mr. Chu,” and “Hush.”

Fin.K.L

From the late 90s to the early 2000s, Fin.K.L became one of the most popular K-pop groups, right alongside S.E.S. Established in 1998, the group was made up of Sung Yu-ri, Ock Joo-hyun, Lee Hyori, and Lee Jin.

The group briefly reunited in 2019 on a variety show.

Their signature tracks include “Blue Rain,” “To My Boyfriend,” and “Waiting For You,” among others.

Miss A

Miss A had a good run from 2010 to 2017. They were the first act to have a debut song reach the top of the charts. Their lineup was made up of Suzy, Min, Fei, and Jia. Jia left in 2016, and Min left in 2017, spelling out the disbandment that would soon follow.

As their debut chart-topper, “Bad Girl Good Girl” is obviously worth a look, but you’ll also want to check out songs like “Touch,” “Goodbye Baby,” and “Hush.”

f(x)

f(x) started out as a five-piece group, but after Sulli left in 2015, they remained active as a four-piece made up of Krystal, Amber, Victoria, and Luna.

f(x) debuted in September 2009 with “La Cha Ta.” The group went on hiatus in 2016, with each member pursuing their individual careers in music, modelling, or acting. The group briefly reunited in 2019 for a three-night concert in Tokyo. Krystal insists the group has yet to officially disband, though their relationship with SM Entertainment appears strained.

Brown Eyed Girls

Brown Eyed Girls originally formed in 2006 and rose to popularity in 2008. The group is comprised of Miryo, JeA, Narsha, and Gain, and they are still active today. Brown Eyed Girls began to find popularity in Japan in 2010.

They are best known for “Magic,” “Brave New World,” and “Abracadabra.”

GFriend

GFriend formed in 2015 with the members Yerin, Sowon, Eunha, Yuju, SinB, and Umji. They found early traction with their EP Season of Glass. Their success continued well into 2021, when they ultimately disbanded after their contracts were up.

2NE1

Active from 2009 to 2016, 2NE1 was made up of CL, Dara, Bom, and Minzy. They are best known for going against the grain of stereotypes, exploring various musical styles, fashion, performance routines, and more.

The group reunited to perform “I Am The Best” in April 2022, but there is no indication that they will be resuming activity in an ongoing capacity.

Besides “I Am The Best,” we also recommend “Missing You,” “Come Back Home,” and “I Love You.”

KARA

KARA debuted in 2007. Their final lineup consisted of Gyuri, Youngji, Seungyeon, and Hara, after Nicole, Jiyoung, and Sunghee departed.

There were high expectations for their debut because they were looked upon as successors to Fin.K.L, but it was not received well. They eventually found success with “Honey” in 2009.

If you like “Honey,” you’ll also want to check out “Mamma Mia,” “Mister,” and “Step.”

Secret

Korean pop girl group Secret had a solid run from 2009 to 2018. The group debuted with the four-member lineup of Han Sun-hwa, Song Ji-eun, Jung Ha-na, and Jun Hyo-seong.

Their 2009 debut was disappointing, but in 2010 they found their stride with “Magic” and “Madonna,” picking up the Newcomer Award at the 25th Golden Disk Awards the same year.

WSJN

Debuting in February 2016, WJSN is also known as Cosmic Girls. They kicked off their career with 12 members, adding a 13th in July 2016. WSJN is still active today.

The group is made up of the members Exy, Mei Qi, Dayoung, Yeonjung, Bona, Eunseo, Yeoreum, SeolA, Cheng Xiao, Xuan Yi, Luda, Dawon, and Soobin.

Wonder Girls

Known as “South Korea’s Retro Queens,” Wonder Girls debuted in February 2007. The original lineup consisted of Yeeun, Sunmi, HyunA (quite famous in her own right), Sohee, and Sunye. HyunA left the group later that year in July, and Yubin was added to the group. Sunmi left the group in 2010 to pursue an academic career. The group disbanded in 2017.

Their best songs are still worth a look though. See “Be My Baby,” “Why So Lonely,” and “I Feel You,” with a throwback to the 80s Robert Palmer style music video.

Sistar

Formed in 2010, the girl group Sistar was comprised of Bora, Soyou, Hyolyn, and Dasom. The group had nine consecutive number-one hits, but ultimately disbanded in 2017. The group reunited in 2022 to perform their hit songs on You Hee-yeol’s Sketchbook, but there is no indication that they will be resuming activity.

Their best numbers include “Loving U,” “Alone,” and “Touch My Body.”

Oh My Girl

Oh My Girl got its start in 2015 and is still active today. The initials of their name make up OMG to comedic effect. They started as an eight-piece Kpop girl group, but JinE and Jiho left for different reasons. Today, the lineup consists of Hyojung, YooA, Mimi, Arin, Seunghee, and Yubin.

Some recommended tracks include “Closer,” “Remember Me,” and “Windy Day.”

4Minute

Award-winning K-pop girl group 4Minute formed in 2009 and was active until 2016. The group consisted of Nam Ji-hyun, Heo Ga-yoon, Jeon Ji-yoon, Kown So-hyun, and Kim Hyuna (yes, that HyunA).

If you’re new to 4Minute, check out “Whatcha Doin’ Today?,” “What’s Your Name?,” and “Crazy.”

After School

Formed conceptually around the idea of admissions and graduation, After School was active during the years of 2009 to 2015. The group went through many member changes, with Kahi, Soyoung, Jungah, Bekah, Jooyeon, Raina, Uee, E-Young, Lizzy, Kaeun, and Nana being members at different times.

Given its concept, members were added or removed in an organic “admission” or “graduation” basis.

Nana is still technically a member of After School, and the official disbandment of the group has not been announced.

Give the following a listen – “Shh,” “Bang!,” and “Shampoo.”

T-ara

The girl group T-ara was established in 2009, achieving success across various regions of Asia. The group is made up of Qri, Hyomin, Jiyeon, and Eunjung.

The group went on hiatus in 2018 to pursue solo careers, but they have been active again since 2020.

Best tracks? “Sexy Love,” “Sugar Free,” and “Bo Peep Bo Peep.”

Pristin

Pristin formed in 2016 with 10 members, with most of them appearing on the TV show Produce 101 – Eunwoo, Yuha, Roa, Nayoung, Rena, Kyulkyung, Yehana, Xiyeon, Sungyeon, and Kyla. Remarkably, they wrote and composed their own music.

When only three members signed on to renew their contract in 2019, the group disbanded.

These songs are still hot – “Wee Woo,” “We,” and “Black Widow.”

Lovelyz

The eight-member Lovelyz was active from 2014 to 2021. The group was made up of Jisoo, Jiae, Baby Soul, Mijoo, Kei, Jin, Sujeong, and Yein. Baby Soul was the only one to renew her contract in 2021, so Lovelyz went on hiatus.

Nine Muses

Much like After School, Nine Muses adopted an “admission” and “graduation” system for members. The group debuted in 2010, but their single, “No Playboy,” did poorly. Their comeback single, “Figaro,” did better, reaching the Top 100 Billboard charts the same year.

The group went on hiatus in 2014 but soon returned with a new lineup in 2016, continuing activity until 2019. The group disbanded after the contracts of three former members expired – Hyemi, Keumjo, and Sojin.

Nine Muses has a total of 14 (now former) members – Keumjo, Sojin, Sungah, Gyeongree, Hyuna, Hyemi, Minha, Euaerin, Sera, Lee Sem, Eunji, Rana, Bini, and Jaekyung.

We like “Wild,” “Figaro,” and “Hurt Locker.”

We Girls

From Seoul, South Korea, We Girls debuted in August 2018. The group was originally made up of nine members – Lina, Suha, Jaina, Hyeni, Yehana, Vivian, Woori, Hal Park, and Julie. The group would go through many member changes in the years that followed. After about a year of activity, the group announced their disbandment in March 2022.

“Heart Beat,” “On Air,” and “We Go” are well worth a look.

CLC

CLC (or CrystaL Clear) debuted with their 2015 EP, First Love, and with five members – Yujin, Seungyeon, Yeeun, Sorn, and Seunghee. Two additional members, Eunbin and Elkie, were added in February 2016.

While they disbanded in May 2022, these songs are well worth a listen – “Devil,” “Pepe,” and “No.”

Dal Shabet

Dal Shabet debuted in January 2011. At the time, the group consisted of six members – Serri, Viki, Jiyul, Ah Young, Kaeun, and Subin. Viki would be replaced by Woohee in May 2012. With two members leaving in 2015, Dal Shabet continued activity as a four piece until 2016.

In 2019, Dal Shabet reunited as a six-member group for a mini concert and photo exhibition.

Rainbow

Rainbow came out with their debut mini album, Gossip Girl, in November 2009. The group was made up of seven members – Seungah, Woori, Jaekyung, Yoonhye, Jisook, Noeul, and Hyunyoung. With their seven-year contract up, the group disbanded in 2016, but reunited in 2019 for the 10-year anniversary.

Rainbow’s best tracks: “Mach,” “Whoo,” and “Sweet Dream.”

SONAMOO

The name SONAMOO literally translates to “pine tree.” They launched with the seven-member lineup of Minjae, Sumin, D.ana, Nahyun, Eujin, High.D., and NewSun. They group was active from 2014 to 2021.

Some of their career highlights are “Friday Night,” “I Like U Too Much,” and “I (Knew It).”

Dreamcatcher

Previously MINX, Dreamcatcher was formed in 2014 as a five-piece. Adding two members in 2017, they would relaunch as Dreamcatcher. The group members include SuA, Siyeon, JiU, Handong, Yoohyeon, Dami, and Gahyeon.

Dreamcatcher would embark on a world tour in 2018 and would find some success in Japan in 2019. They are still active today.

Momoland

Formed on the reality show Finding Momoland, Momoland debuted in 2017. Originally a seven-member group, Momoland added two additional members in 2017. Today’s lineup consists of Hyebin, Ahin, Jane, Nancy, JooE, and Nayun. Taeha, Daisy, and Yeonwoo are no longer part of Momoland.

We’re partial to “I’m So Hot,” “Baam,” and “Bboom, Bboom,” but there are plenty of other songs worth checking out.

April

In the wake of Fin.K.L, Kara, and Rainbow, April debuted in August 2015. At the time, the group consisted of six members – Chaewon, Hyunjoo, Somin, Naeun, Yena, and Jinsol. After Somin’s departure, the group would go onto follow up their debut with their album, Boing Boing.

April would go through multiple member changes, but they would continue to find success, even in Japan.

That is until an individual claiming to be Hyunjoo’s brother said she left the group because of continued bullying.

After a year of inactivity, the group disbanded in January 2022, having faced major backlash.

They still had some highlights in their career, though, including “Take My Hand,” “Oh! My Mistake,” and “Tinker Bell.”

Spica

Girl group Spica was launched in 2012. The group was made up of five members – Park Sihyun, Kim Boa, Park Narae, Yang Jiwon, and Kim Bohyung. Spica disbanded in 2017 but have promised to reunite in the future.

If they do reunite, it means we’ll get to hear more songs like these – “Russian Roulette,” “I’ll Be There,” and “Tonight.”

Loona

Loona was launched in October 2016, with each member gradually being revealed as they each released a single over the course of 18 months.

One by one, the 12 members were revealed – HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul, YeoJin, ViVi, Kim Lip, JinSoul, Choerry, Yves, Chuu, Go Won, and Olivia Hye.

Their official Korean debut landed in 2018 with their first EP, [+ +], and their activity continues in Korea, Japan, and beyond, to this day.

Orange Caramel

Orange Caramel formed as a subgroup of After School, with members Nana, Raina, and Lizzy, in 2010. The group was active until 2016, though After School and Orange Caramel related promotions began to wane 2015 onward. Orange Caramel’s future, however, still hangs in the balance, as fans await their reunion.

Here are some catchy Orange Caramel tunes – “Bangkok City,” “Lipstick,” and “Catallena.”

AOA

AOA stands for “Ace of Angels.” It originally started as an eight-member group in 2012, but most left between 2016 and 2021, leaving Hyejeong, Chanmi, and Seolhyun to carry the torch.

AOA, as with other groups in this guide, ended up disbanding due to a bullying scandal, with Jimin retiring from the entertainment industry. The group has essentially been inactive since 2020.

They still left us with some fun tunes, like “Short Hair,” “Like A Cat,” and “Heart Attack.”

Hello Venus

Hello Venus originally debuted with the six members – Lime, Nara, Alice, Yooara, Yooyoung, and Yoonjo, in 2012. In 2014, Fantagio brought in two new members under their umbrella – Yeoreum and Seoyoung. With their contracts expiring in 2019, the group disbanded.

Some of their memorable moments include “Wiggle Wiggle,” “Venus,” and “I’m Ill.”

Blackswan

Debuting under the name Rania, Blackswan is kind of unique, because they’re a South Korean based multinational group. The group has gone through many member changes through the years, with the current lineup consisting of Leia, Fatou, Sriya, and Gabi. The group is still active today.

Crayon Pop

Crayon Pop debuted in 2012, but their initial efforts were met with apathy. Once they started putting on guerilla stye street performances in Seoul, their popularity began to grow. The current membership consists of Ellin, Way, Choa, and Geummi.

Check out these tunes – “FM,” “Hero,” and “Bar Bar Bar.”

DIA

Short for DIAMOND, DIA (or Do It Amazing) launched in September 2015. The current lineup includes Jueun, Eunice, Huihyeon, Yebin, Chaeyeon, and Eunchae. The group’s activity continues to this day, but their contract ends this September 2022. It’s anyone’s guess as to whether DIA will continue thereafter.

DIA’s got great songs like “Woowoo,” “Will You Go Out With Me,” and “On The Road.”

Uni.T

Uni.T was originally formed on the KBS survival show The Unit, featuring idols who had already debuted. They had a short-lived run in 2018 with a nine-member configuration – Yang Ji-won, Yoonjo, ZN, NC.A, Bae Woo-hee, Euijin, Yebin, Lee Hyun-joo, and Lee Su-ji.

Members of Uni.T come from T-ara, Spica, Hello Venus, Dal Shabet, Laboum, SONAMOO, DIA, and others.

Berry Good

Berry Good formed in 2014. The group went through multiple incarnations, with their final lineup consisting of Sehyung and Johyun. The group disbanded in 2021.
