The 2023 AP exams will take place over a two-week period in May: May 1–5 and May 8–12.

The AP Calculus AB exam for 2023 will be a full-length paper-and-pencil exam that students can take in school only. 

Here is what you need to know to do well in the upcoming AP Calculus AB exam. 

Will I get AP credit for the 2023 AP Calculus AB exam?

Students who take the 2023 AP Calculus AB exam will be eligible for college credit.

As in previous years, a student must obtain a score of 3, 4, or 5 to be eligible for college credit.

The 2023 AP Calculus AB exam will be 3 hours, 15 minutes long.

The 2023 AP Calculus AB exam is scheduled for Monday, May 8 at 8 AM local time.  

What will be tested on the 2023 AP Calculus AB exam?

The 2023 AP Calculus AB exam will test students on the whole course content, so be prepared to answer questions on these topics:

  • Unit 1: Limits and Continuity
  • Unit 2: Differentiation: Definition and Fundamental Properties
  • Unit 3: Differentiation: Composite, Implicit, and Inverse Functions 
  • Unit 4: Contextual Applications of Differentiation
  • Unit 5: Analytical Applications of Differentiation
  • Unit 6: Integration and Accumulation of Change
  • Unit 7: Differential Equations
  • Unit 8: Applications of Integration

What is the AP Calculus AB exam format for 2023?

The 2023 AP Calculus AB exam will be split equally between two sections: multiple-choice and free-response questions. Each section is worth 50 percent of the exam score. 

You will have 1 hour, 45 minutes to answer 45 multiple-choice questions and 1 hour, 30 minutes to answer 6 free-response questions. There are two parts to each section.

Each section has 2 parts with different time allocation and specific rules on the use of a calculator.

The chart below shows the breakdown of the exam components.

You must use a graphing calculator, such as this TI-84 graphing calculator by Texas Instruments, for Part B of the multiple-choice section and Part A of the free-response section. 

You may not use a calculator for Part A of the multiple-choice section and Part B of the free-response section.

The College Board is offering a number of free AP Calculus AB exam resources to students to help them prepare for the exam.

The College Board’s AP YouTube channel gives students access to APLive classes and recordings delivered by AP teachers from across the country. Additionally, to help students review course content and skills before their exam, the College Board gives students access to the AP Daily: Live Review sessions for the 2023 AP Calculus AB exam. 

What are my other options for preparing for the 2023 AP Calculus AB exam?

If you don’t have an AP Calculus BC review book already, consider getting one sooner than later to help you prepare for the 2023 AP Calculus BC exam. You can find popular review books published by Barron’s, The Princeton Review, and others at Amazon.

And the AP Calculus Premium, 2022-2023: 12 Practice Tests + Comprehensive Review + Online Practice (Barron’s Test Prep) Sixteenth Edition, for example, which is ranked 4.6 stars, costs just $29.99 (at the time of writing of this article).

There are also online resources that you can use to help you prepare for the 2023 AP Calculus AB exam. 

In partnership with the College Board, Khan Academy provides an official AP Calculus AB course that comes with free instructional videos, articles, and practice exercises created by current and former AP teachers. In addition, Khan Academy offers free exam skills and strategies.

This AP Calculus AB course, available through edX, is taught by professors from Davidson College. This course provides “short instructional videos, interactive graphs, and practice problems written by many of the same people who write and grade your AP Calculus exams.”

You can audit this course for free, but there’s a $49 fee to obtain a Verified Certificate.
