I’ve been an ASUS fan since my first ASUS VivoBook about 5 years ago and B&H usually has the most recent models on the market. However this time I was a little bit dissapointed after the unboxing.
My user profile:
First, I bought this laptop since I do a lot of 3D Modelling, AutoCAD, Revit, FEM-Analysis and large spreadsheets (Civil Engineer), all at once, so I need multi-performance and medium to high graphic card specs.
It takes a little bit of time to get used to the keyboard layout and the typing experience is pretty decent, though the keys could be a little bit softer to press. Maybe it is just my personal impression, since I am used to VivoBook keyboards. Not a big concern however.
It is not the lightest laptop that you will find so just keep in mind that for long commutes or carrying it in your backpack everyday. I tend to work remotely or in my desktop, but sometimes I am on the go with my laptop and other gadgets.
PROS:
Processor speed, graphic card and overall performance is decent and vast enough for most of my above mentioned tasks and related software, as well for multitasking, web surfing. I guess you gamers out there will find this specs maybe entry-level, but for more normal users it is more than enough.
Batery life is not great as another types of notebooks like a VivoBook, but enough to get you out of a hurry during a meeting or a couple of hours of light work in your bed or sofa. So keep in mind to have your power adapter always near.
Screen resolution, Wifi speed, ports and hardware pretty much enough for most users out there. So many comments about that.
Build quality overall sturdy and tough without losing it’s sleekness and elegance. So a really good option to keep a professional look without losing performance and hardware horsepower. Big pro for me the numpad (personal dealbreaker).
CONS:
It comes just with an 1 TB SSD (about 930 GB free) more than enough for installing all my apps and AEC related software to run it smooth. However if you are concerned about storage just buy an extra internal SSD or something like that. I use cloud storage.
It is not a no-go for me, but I was kinda excited about having an RGB keyboard (and just wanted to have a blue or green backlight), but it seems this model doesn’t has this feature although it is announced on the B&H site.
If this is a dealbreaker for you just go for a ROG or a AMD model maybe. It is not awful for me since I do casual gaming sometimes (AOE or Civ VI, sometimes Forza). Keyboard brightness is pretty good and you can synchronize armoury crate with external hardware for RGB options.
Speaker quality is not that great even though it has DOLBY ATMOS. High pitches are like shaky… I like to listen to high fidelity audio and music, but when at it’s maximum capacity fans get kinda loud, so just get yourself some earphones or a speaker if that is much of a concern. On a normal or silent mode you won’t even notice them.
Sum up:
A good mix of performance, high specs and durability. Good aesthetics and construction overall. Not that lightweight but still portable. Battery life more than enough for saving you a couple of hours but not for an all day long routine. Ideal as a workstation or gaming base set up.
