ASUS ZenWiFi XT8 AX6600 Wireless Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi System (2-Pack, Charcoal)

ASUS XT8 Overview

If you need more coverage throughout your home, you can add AiMesh devices to expand the ZenWiFi system. Optional AiMesh-compatible routers can act as Wi-Fi nodes around your house. Nodes closest to other ZenWiFi routers can boost your network signal where existing equipment might not reach.

Each router features a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A port for the connection of optional peripherals to enhance your network’s capabilities. Give all of your devices access to a USB printer or access to external USB storage.

The ZenWiFi system supports Alexa and IFTTT-compatible smart home devices, allowing you to use voice commands and IFTTT applets to control the routers. Use your voice to start a guest network, pause the internet, and more.

ASUS AiProtection is a free-for-life service that requires no subscription fee to use. It’s designed to protect your data, keep your family safe, let you monitor network usage, and control network access.

ASUS designed the ZenWiFi system setup to be a 3-step process. Utilizing the ASUS Router app, you just have to turn on the routers, create a network name and admin account, and then wait a few minutes. That’s it. This one-time setup includes auto-synchronization for each of the routers, and each router can work as the main router or as an extender node.

This ZenWiFi system delivers three individual Wi-Fi bands, two 5 GHz bands and one 2.4 GHz band. You have the option of combining them under a single network name, or keeping them separate with names for each band. You also have the option of dedicating one of the 5 GHz bands for backhaul support. A backhaul connection is the network connection between the routers themselves and is not something your mobile devices can see or utilize. If you choose to not set one up, your mobile devices can use all 3 bands for network and internet access, but the routers will communicate on one of the 5 GHz bands. If you select to have a backhaul connection, the router and device traffic are separated, reducing possible network congestion. This system also supports a wired backhaul solution. You can utilize one of the Ethernet ports on each router to connect to your existing network for a wired backhaul connection. This gives the routers a dedicated connection, while giving your mobile devices access to all three wireless bands.

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) supports a feature called Target Wake Time (TWT), which has the ability to schedule when compatible devices can wake from sleep modes to check-in with the network or internet. This lets devices stay asleep longer, saving battery life.

With support for Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) technology and 160 MHz wide channels, you can enjoy network speeds up to 6.6 Gb/s, which is enough for 8K-quality live streams with compatible devices. Please note that 160 MHz bandwidth may be unavailable in the 5 GHz band in some regions/countries due to regulatory restrictions.

The ZenWiFi system has been designed for easy and intuitive setup and network management, but gives you the ability to take control for a customized experience that’s right for you. For example, you can have your mobile devices use all three wireless bands, or designate a 5 GHz band for backhaul operations to optimize the network speed of your devices. The ZenWiFi system also provides data security, parental controls, support for smart-home services, and is compatible with additional ASUS AiMesh components.

Provide Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home with this ZenWiFi XT8 AX6600 Wireless Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi System from ASUS . This system consists of two AX6600 6.6Gb/s routers that have the ability to cover up to 5500 square feet of your home, both inside and outside. This wireless coverage can be seamless, with a single name for the entire network, so you can move around your home without needing to reconnect from one router to the other.

Astonishingly bad support

I really wanted to like this router. I was excited for all the features. But I never even got online.
The problem:
* There is no manual, just a useless Quickstart guide.
* The app required for setup is buggy and very touchy.
* After going through setup, I got a red light: no internet. This despite confirming traffic is coming through the modem.
* I called Asus support. I spent over ten minutes just spelling my name, email, and the serial number multiple times until I was even allowed to say what the problem was. (Not the support person’s fault; their mandatory script is just horrible, though).
* After being put on hold four times(!) I was told the router is definitely compatible with the modem but there is some problem with the router. Yeah! I know! That’s why I called.
* The only solution offered was to take it back to the retailer. I’m going to do exactly that, and never buy an Asus router again.
In some, I ahve no idea if this router is any good when it actually connects. I’m sorry I never got to find out.

The WiFi router speed is excellent compared to my previous router. The setup instructions are clear and quick to connect. The router dimensions are compact and looks great.

I was amazed at how easy and flawless the setup was. I anticipated some problems but there were none. Everything worked and so far the range and signal strength are very impressive.
This system replaced my not even one year old competitor’s mesh system that kept dropping connections. I spent hours on the phone with their support and they could not fix it and said the problem was my iPhones and iPads. Apple even gave me a new replacement phone but same problem. That’s when I decided to try this system and the problem was fixed.

This is a replacement for my router that died a day earlier. Set up was a breeze. Had the system up and running quickly then it did a update.
Range and speed is better than my old router. I do miss all the status lights (yes geeky).

My old router was really old so my research showed ASUS was the way to go. Cost for a mesh router was more but well worth it. Connectivity and bitrate is awesome. Installation was easy and painless. Many options if needed are easy accessible and changeable through the phone app. Very pleased.
