Acer Iconia A1 review: budget Android tablet with a microSD card slot
Source:
The budget Android tablet market is a brilliant arms race. The Acer Iconia A1 is right in the mix as one of the best tablets in terms of value for money. If you’re looking for something to surf the web, use social networks and watch videos on the A1 merits consideration. The fact that it has a microSD card slot makes it a really attractive tablet for £149.

Model:
Acer has joined the bandwagon of budget tablets by releasing the Acer Iconia A1 product range. The Iconia A1-811 is a 3G version of the tablet. The specs are pretty decent and while the built quality is not spectacular, it looks passable. This Android 4.2.2 (JB) tablet weighs around 430 grams and features 7.9” Active Matrix screen. The plastic screen might not be as rigid as glass, but it will do. Form factor and finish makes it look like something that is quite comfortable to use even if it is not made from premium materials.
The 4960 mAh Li-ion battery powers the MediaTek 1.20Ghz Quad-core processor and 1 GB RAM. Battery life is average and can last a weekend of web browsing with a couple of movies thrown in as suggested by Acer. The device comes with a 16 GB storage space and here is the tiny but surprising part; it comes with a MicroSD slot. This allows even larger savings with the possible addition of a 32 GB memory card instead of purchasing a higher memory capacity tablet. The tablet comes with a rear 5 megapixels and front VGA camera. Acer has kept the software clean with minimal bloatware and that is a good thing. The Acer Iconia A1-811 is value for money with enough capability to make the average user contented.
PowerVR SGX545:
Integrated GPU in a number of Intel Atom Clover Trail processors.
These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

7.90″:
This display size is a threshold between tablets and smartphones. Most tablets have larger screen diagonals but a lot of smartphones offer such a big screen.
Large display-sizes allow higher resolutions. So, details like letters are bigger. On the other hand, the power consumption is lower with small screen diagonals and the devices are smaller, more lightweight and cheaper.

0.46 kg:
This is pretty heavy for a smartphone. Usually, small tablets weigh as much.
Acer: The company was founded under the name of Multitech in Taiwan in 1976 and renamed to Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors and televisions. Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell also belong to the Group and sell their own laptops.
While Acer still had the third largest global market share in the notebook segment in 2008, it ranked 6th in 2016 with a market share of 6% after they had continuously lost market shares.
There are dozens of Acer laptop reviews per month, the ratings are average (as of 2016). Gateway, which has an own laptop line-up, has also belonged to the Acer Group since 2007.
78%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
