Crime Grade’s violent crime map shows areas where violent crime per person is highest, weighted by the type and severity of the crime. The F grade means the rate of violent crime is much higher than the average US city. Anchorage is in the 1st percentile for safety, meaning 99% of cities are safer and 1% of cities are more dangerous.

The rate of violent crime in Anchorage is 18.11 per 1,000 residents during a standard year. People who live in Anchorage generally consider the southeast part of the city to be the safest for this type of crime.

Your chance of being a victim of violent crime in Anchorage may be as high as 1 in 13 in the southwest neighborhoods, or as low as 1 in 430 in the southeast part of the city. See the section on interpreting the violent crime map, however, because comparing rates for violent crime or any other crime is not as intuitive as it may seem.

Interpreting the Violent Crime Maps

When looking at the violent crime map for Anchorage, remember that the rate of violent crime per resident may appear inflated when people visit the area during the day, but do not live there. For example, there are more retail establishments in the west part of the city. Many crimes are committed in retail areas in blocks where few people live. Red areas on the violent crime rate map do not always indicate danger for Anchorage residents who live there.

More issues arise with places like airports, parks, and schools. Major airports, of which Anchorage has 1, always look like high-crime locations due to the large number of people and the low population nearby. Parks and designated recreational areas, of which Anchorage has 35, have the same problem. Of Anchorage’s 247,069 residents, few live near recreational areas. Because many people visit, crime rates may appear higher even for safe parks. Ultimately crime happens where people are, whether they live there or not. Before writing off an area as unsafe, look at both the crime rate and total crime maps, then consider nearby destinations that people may be visiting.
