Apple held its big annual September event on Tuesday, but for once it wasn’t about the iPhone.

In a major departure from years past, Apple announced two upgraded Apple Watches, a redesigned iPad Air, a refreshed eighth-generation iPad, a new fitness service, and new digital subscriptions at its September event — but no iPhone.

Among the biggest announcements was Apple Fitness Plus, a new Peloton-like workout streaming service. Apple device owners can tune into guided workouts from top trainers, and even view their Apple Watch metrics onscreen.

The company is expected to unveil its iPhone 12 lineup in October, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Apple said during its most recent earnings call that it expected the next iPhone to be delayed because of disruptions related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Apple’s services and wearables divisions have been bright spots for the company as iPhone sales have slowed, opening up revenue streams for existing iPhone users rather than relying on upgrades.

Apple’s September event took place virtually for the first time this year because of COVID-19, much like its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
