The Asus X550CC-XO229D has been built down to a price. The plastic body tells of its budget friendly nature, and there is a lack of quality apparent in the hinges. The cheap feel is inescapable, but the casing is otherwise decent enough. Weighing in at 2.3 kg, this 15.6 inch machine is no lightweight, but it’s portable. The island style keys are spacious and support long hours of error free typing. The matte 1366 x 768 screen provides nice colors and contrast; it wouldn’t be realistic to expect a Full HD screen at this price.
The previous generation Ivy Bridge, Intel Core i3-3217U chugs along at 1.8 GHz inside. The combination of Intel HD Graphics HD4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT720M is a nice boost of graphics power that will just about allow users to play moderately demanding games at the lowest possible settings. The Asus X550CC-XO229D is only equipped with 1 USB 3.0 port and 1 USB 2.0 port. This may represent a serious hindrance for some users. Overall, this budget machine does what it sets out to do. As such, it will not bedazzle the senses with an innovative and gorgeous design, or take ones breath away with sheer speed. It will fit nicely within a budget, and be good enough for getting work done, as long as the programs used aren’t too demanding.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 720M: Lower middle-class graphics card based on the 28 nm GF117 (Fermi).
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
