Barbie Trailer Edit Adds Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’ Song… and Fans Love It

The new Barbie trailer looks to be a lot of fun for viewers, but for some, it seems like it’s missing something. Previously, it had been revealed that Aqua’s hit song “Barbie Girl” would not be included in the film, and as such, not a tune of it was heard in the trailer. This has led to some on social media considering the omission of the song to be a missed opportunity, and the curiosity about what it could be like has now been satisfied thanks to HYTT Films on YouTube. The channel has released an edited version of the Barbie trailer that includes “Barbie Girl,” and it seems to fit rather well. You can check it out below.

“The version we deserve,” reads one top comment left on the trailer, liked hundreds of times by others.

Another commenter stated, “Making a trailer for the Barbie movie without the song by Aqua is a grievous oversight by Warner Bros. marketing.”

“This works really well,” says someone else. “I wish this was the official trailer because combining that song with the footage makes me felt just a really positive, cheerful vibe overall and that I’m in for a fun time.”

Why Isn’t the “Barbie Girl” Song in the Barbie Movie?

Last year, Aqua lead singer Lene Nystrøm confirmed the reports that the song “Barbie Girl” would not be used in Barbie. While the band couldn’t say for certain why they weren’t contacted about getting the song for the movie, it’s most likely due to the legal trouble that it caused between Aqua and Mattel. When the song was released in 1997, Mattel sued MCA Records for trademark infringement, prompting the record company to counter-sue for defamation. Both claims were tossed with parody law protecting the song, but there could still be some ill feelings toward Aqua over at Mattel following that fiasco.

In any case, Nystrøm suggested to Variety that adding the song might be a bit too over-the-top, making Barbie feel like “cheese on cheese,” though it’s worth noting that these comments came long before the new trailer showed just how wild the film already is without “Barbie Girl.” Even so, Nystrøm had a hunch that the film would still bring some renewed attention to the Aqua song regardless, and as we’re seeing that come to be, it turns out she was right.

“I totally understand why they didn’t use it, but it’s going to bring us a lot of attention, no matter what,” she said.

Barbie will be released in movie theaters on July 21, 2023. You can watch the real trailer for the film below.
