Embarrassingly useless LEGO Star Wars trivia!

Posted by CapnRex101, 04 May 2023 15:00

LEGO Star Wars was launched in 1999 and nearly 900 sets have been produced, naturally resulting in occasional peculiar facts and trivia.

Whenever possible, I like to include some trivia in reviews and other articles, although certain details are not easily integrated. Fortunately, May the Fourth provides an ideal opportunity to share some LEGO Star Wars trivia, finally finding a use for genuinely useless information!

Who’s Missing: Star Wars Inquisitors

Posted by Huw, 04 May 2023 12:00

The second of today’s Star Wars articles by guest authors has been written by SearchlightRG:

Among the staples of the Disney Star Wars era are the Inquisitors, an order of former Jedi turned agents of the dark side of the Force and the evil Galactic Empire. Though the concept dates back to before Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, their take on the Inquisitors first appeared in 2014’s Star Wars Rebels. Four Inquisitors appeared in that series, though only two would appear in minifigure form before the LEGO subtheme came to an end in 2017. The Grand Inquisitor and Fifth Brother, said Inquisitors, would later return in 2022 in a set for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

75336 Inquisitor Transport Scythe, the set in question, also introduced the Third Sister, a new addition to the ranks of the Inquisitorious. Appropriately, if disappointingly, she is only the third Inquisitor to receive a physical minifigure. This leaves the number of Inquisitor characters with Minifigures is only half that of the Knights of Ren. That group of Sequel Trilogy characters is a rough equivalent to the Inquisitors, though the Imperial faction strikes me as both more impressive and more interesting.

How does LEGO depict conflict in Star Wars sets?

Posted by Huw, 04 May 2023 09:00

To celebrate Star Wars day we’ll be publishing two articles on the subject by guest authors. The first has been written by Ainulindale, aka Joshua C. Fjelstul, Ph.D., a data scientist with an interest in data visualisations and LEGO:

LEGO themes often depict conflict between factions. Some sets only include good guys, some only include bad guys, and some include both — directly depicting conflict. How LEGO distributes protagonists and antagonists across sets influences the play experience for children, especially when a child only has the opportunity to get one or two sets from a theme. If a child’s sets only include protagonists or antagonists, their play experience will likely be different than if they include both.

LEGO strategically designs sets to optimise some combination of sales revenue and the play experience for consumers. A critical aspect of set design is which minifigs to include. So what’s LEGO’s strategy? How often do LEGO sets directly depict conflict by including protagonists and antagonists in the same set, as opposed to including only protagonists or only antagonists, and how has LEGO’s minifig-inclusion strategy changed over time?

Yesterday was an exceptionally busy day! New sets emerged from City, Friends, Harry Potter, Technic, Monkie Kid and more themes, not to mention the introduction of DREAMZzz.

With that in mind, it is probably a good time to summarise everything revealed in the last few days, the majority of which will be released in June.

LEGO pilots VIP points at US LEGOLAND Discovery Centre

Posted by CapnRex101, 03 May 2023 12:30

Historically, VIP points have not been available with any purchases from LEGOLAND parks or LEGOLAND Discovery Centres. Some queried whether the situation would shift after LEGO acquired Merlin, thus regaining control of the parks and Discovery Centres.

It seems this change is closer than ever, as LEGO is currently testing VIP point availability at a LEGOLAND Discovery Centre in New Jersey, in the American Dream mall. At the moment, this is limited to a single outlet, but it seems like a potential step in the right direction.

Images of four upcoming Monkie Kid sets have been posted on LEGO.com, in advance of their release on the 1st of June.

Perhaps the most appealing is 80049 Dragon of the East Palace, although all four look interesting to me.
