First Impressions | Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Aqua Booster SPF 50+ PA ++++ & Anessa Essence UV Sunscreen Aqua Booster SPF 50+ PA ++++

In this post, I will be sharing my first impressions of 2 popular sunscreens by the Japanese brand Shiseido, the Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Aqua Booster and the Anessa Essence UV Sunscreen Aqua Booster.

Type of Sunscreen

Both are hybrid chemical & mineral sunscreens with SPF 50+ PA++++ which means they offer high levels of protection against UVB & UVA rays.

Additionally, they use Triple Defense Technologies: Thermo Booster Technology, Aqua Booster EX Technology, and Super Waterproof which basically means that the products consists of ingredients that enhance the UV protection veil when in contact with heat, sweat or water.

*It is the first in the world that key ingredients (PEG/PPG-14/7 dimethyl ether, stearic acid, and PEG/PPG-9/2 dimethyl ether) were selected for the purpose of facilitating the UV-cut ingredients to spread within the base when they come into contact with sweat and water, or heat (as of October 2019, Shiseido research)

“Thermo Booster Technology”: UV protection veil becomes stronger with heat. Heat acts on the UV defense ingredients to spread over the skin, forming a uniform veil.

“Aqua Booster EX technology”: UV protection veil spreads more evenly when exposed to sweat or water and becomes further stronger.

Friction-resistant: Its unique powder ingredient allows the fingers to slide smoothly, preventing UV protection veil from coming off easily.

Moisturizing and conditioning ingredients: Protects skin from dryness.

To entice consumers even more the sunscreens have added skincare ingredients, with the Silver Anessa Essence UV Sunscreen Aqua Booster focusing on skincare more, and the Gold Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Aqua Booster focusing mainly on the strong UV protection.

Other Claims:
> Easily removable with soap
> Super Water Proof – Water resistance proven by an 80-minute bathing test
> Milk with airy touch won’t leave white spots or stiffness on skin
> Sand Resistant – Prevent sand from sticking to the skin
> Can be used as makeup primer
> Refreshing fragrance of citrus soap
> Colorant-free, allergy tested (it carries no guarantee that it won’t cause allergic reactions)

I tested both sunscreens out twice to see how true to the claims they are. I didn’t go to the beach so I don’t have anything to say about ‘sand resistance’ but will be sharing my thoughts on the rest.

Quantity & Packaging

I got the 2 sunscreens in 4ml sample sachets but they can be purchased in either 20ml or 60ml size bottles. As the sunscreen is for face and body I’d personally get the 60ml size however I do wish the quantity was a lot more.

As you can see in the image below, the Gold one is the Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Aqua Booster which is described as having a smooth texture whereas the Silver one is the Anessa Essence UV Sunscreen Aqua Booster which is described as having a moisturizing texture.

Scent

Both sunscreens have a light fresh scent with a hint of citrus.

My Experience

Anessa Essence UV Sunscreen Aqua Booster (Silver)

anessa sunscreen

The first time I used it I noticed that it was a very light milky fluid with a slippery Dimethicone feeling. It is very runny and spreads easily over the skin. It dried down to an almost oily glycerin/ silicone finish with a slight shine to the skin but no white cast and didn’t feel heavy.

The second time I used it, I noticed it did actually feel quite greasy and had a slightly heavier silicone feeling which actually acted as a very good makeup primer for me. It was an extremely hot sunny day and my skin did not heat up in the scorching heat like it usually does so I think it’s really effective for heat protection. It also removed well with an oil cleanser/ double cleanse. My eyes did sting slightly when washing my face but I’m not sure if it’s because of this sunscreen or because of my mascara. During the day while I was wearing it, it didn’t sting or irritate my eye area in anyway and I also didn’t get any breakouts after using it.

Gold Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Aqua Booster

I noticed that this one is ever so slightly thicker than the silver version. It also has a smooth Dimethicone feeling with a slight pasty under-texture but it wasn’t slippery like the silver version. The photo I took of the product on the back of my hand doesn’t show clearly but it did leave a subtle white cast on my face which was expected as the mineral sun protection ingredients are higher up in the ingredients list, but I covered that up easily with my foundation anyway. It’s a bit too silky smooth for me but it worked really well as a makeup primer which was expected again as Dimethicone is the first ingredient for both versions. In fact my makeup stayed on longer than it usually does throughout the day without touch-ups so bonus points for that.

And again just like the silver version, on a very hot day this sunscreen was amazing at protecting my skin. I was a bit worried that my skin might get dry and flakey however because of the high mineral ingredient content, like I experienced with the Biore Watery Gel sunscreen, but my skin stayed smooth and hydrated.

When washing it off, I splashed water on my face first without any cleanser to see what the sunscreen is like when it comes into contact with water alone; I noticed water droplets sitting on my face as if there is a barrier between the water and my skin. I then double cleansed my skin with an oil cleanser and water based cleanser and then tested with another water splash and there was no longer a barrier between my skin and the water so it’s clear that this sunscreen really is creating a protective barrier and is water resistant. That being said I would still reapply this during the day if I went swimming just to be on the safe side.

An additional side note I’d like to add is that the Cerave Hydrating Cleanser could not get passed this sunscreen at all and it definitely needed something soapy like the company states in their claims.

Comparison Swatches

I’m not sure if you can tell by these comparison swatches but the gold version does indeed have a smooth texture and the silver version does have more of a moisturising texture with more of a shine to it.

Will I Repurchase? I would get both of these again but in the mild version as it doesn’t contain alcohol or fragrance. I’m looking forward to purchasing the mild versions and hope they are just as effective in protecting my skin.
