Geotechnical Issues and Answers During Construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline

The Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline completed in 1977 was an unprecedented construction project. Some of the most challenging problems faced were in the geotechnical field. In the format of issues and answers, this paper highlights the activities and decision-making functions of the field engineering organization which was developed. This organization was responsive to the identified need for field confirmation of geotechnical conditions during construction and for assurance of adequacy of as-built construction. Appropriate procedures and lines of communication were established to satisfy these needs.
