H Pylori IgA IgG IgM Blood Test

This test measures 3 types of antibodies to Helicobacter Pylori (H Pylori), IgA, IgM, and IgG.  H Pylori is a bacteria commonly found in the stomach. It weakens the stomach’s natural protective lining making it more susceptible to damage from gastric acid. This can lead to the development of ulcers and in time, increase the risk of developing stomach cancer.  A blood test for H Pylori Antibodies can aid in making a proper diagnosis and help determine if a person has a recent or chronic infection.  Measuring 3 different types of antibodies can be useful in providing more comprehensive information than a test for a single antibody type.

• IgM antibodies typically appear shortly after infection and fade out over time.
• IgA antibodies develop shortly after infection and are typically highest during an active infection.  Not all people will show significant IgA levels even if they have an infection.
• IgG antibodies typically develop within several months of infections and can persist for years, even after successful treatment.

Because not all people will develop antibodies at the same time or at consistent levels, an accurate H Pylori diagnosis may require additional testing.  The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) recommends either an H Pylori Breath Test or an H Pylori Stool Antigen Test for identifying an active infection.  Blood testing has a sensitivity of 85% and a specificity of 79% whereas Breath testing has a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 97.9% and Stool testing has a sensitivity of 96% and a specificity of 96%.  Breath testing is also considered the most effective way of determining if treatment for H Pylori was effective.

H Pylori blood test is usually ordered when a person has symptoms associated with infection.  Symptoms of H Pylori typically include heartburn, nausea, gas, stomach or abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting, and indigestion.
