I am Your King review

This post contains spoilers

I actually really enjoyed ‘I am Your King’. When it was first announced I was quite excited, more so because it was a mystery as to what the story was at first.

Whilst the premise isn’t particularly original, friends getting drunk and daring each other, it still felt relatively original for a BL Drama as I have only really seen the trope in Manga and Fanfic. I liked the way the King game was set up too, as it wasn’t just something random but as part of a farewell party.

I’ve seen some people be critical of the acting but I honestly thought it was good. At no point did I find them awkward, a major bonus for BL, plus the entire cast had good chemistry with each other, and I felt they really did feel like a group of friends you’d find in real life. I was especially impressed with Mark who was perfect as August. In particular I loved the King game scene. The scene really felt realistic, I could easily see such a scene happening in real life. I also liked how none of them made much of a fuss about what they did at the party, seeing it as a game and nothing to be ashamed of, something very rarely seen, yet much appreciated.

The twist that New and August were in a secret relationship was honestly surprising to me, and it felt natural and not just something added for extra drama. The relationship added something a little different to the story too. How much of the relationship drama was handled was really quite mature as well. It proved the point that the setting of a series is not the issue when it comes to the maturity of characters nor their actions, but how the story was itself handled.

The character of August was probably my favourite and I’m sad he never got a definitive happy ending. His character came across as the cute best friend type in how he helped Bright with Som and genuinely seemed to want to help his friend. I felt so sorry for him throughout too, all he wanted was to be able to act like other couples in public, not have to hide who he was and who he loved. More importantly he wanted that with New. Despite having done nothing wrong he felt real guilt when Bright kissed him. This guilt was shown again the morning after he slept with Bright, even though he and New were no longer together. Everything about his character and story was unfair, he was the one to feel the most pain due to the situation, yet he still let New go because he knew it was what New wanted. I am very interested to see how his story progresses in SS2.

Junho and Matt are my favourite couple. I adore the dynamic they have as I’m a fan of Senior-Junior ships. Also I’m extra bias as I watched the series due to M’s involvement, and because of the locker slamming scene. I felt that they also had the most interesting relationship out of the couples, if only because we learnt very little about them.

I enjoyed the way Pond’s mum was subtle in the way she guided them, never really meddling but happy to give advice and help them. Her acceptance of Pond (and New) was also a cute moment as little was made of it which I liked.

The story could be confusing at times however that could simply have been due to the subs. The series also felt very short, and a little rushed towards the end. However the story did only take place over several days and therefore I’m not sure how much it could have been expanded given they all started off as friends. I’m quite confused as to why it seemed New and Pond’s kiss when they were in the bedroom together was not shown, it seems such an odd decision. In parts the show did have the feeling of being cut, and not naturally as a few of the scene transitions made little sense.

My only major issue with the series was the fact they seemed to cut Peem out of the first 4 episodes and have him show up only at the very, very, end of episode 5 in the stinger. I’m really sad the Junho and Matt never got a real conclusion to their relationship, with them not really being in the final episode. I hope that SS2 focuses more on these characters, and introduces us to Peem and Junho’s relationship.

Overall it’s an enjoyable series that has a few problems, but what series doesn’t, and honestly I can not wait for SS2!
