I am a Learner
Description
“I am a Learner” is an example of a social narrative, which is an evidence-based practice found effective for teaching social and behavior skills to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder as well as others who demonstrate social and behavioral challenges. It is based upon the Social Stories strategy developed by Carol Gray. Written at approximately a third grade reading level, “I am a Learner” can be adapted for use with children either younger or older, in general and special education classrooms. This story introduces general classroom expectations to students by breaking them into specific steps and presenting them one at a time. It can be used as part of a strategy to help implement IEP goals which target learning to learn skills. This story can be used during whole group, small group or individual instruction. A classroom poster is included at the end of story which can be posted to serve as a visual support. In addition worksheets are included to review and reinforce the presented concepts.
