Mountain Rose Apples

Description/Taste

The Mountain Rose apple is yellow to green, covered extensively with a red to pink blush, and speckled with faint white lenticels. The skin is quite delicate and can bruise easily. Their real claim to fame is the bright pink to red flesh that remains vivid even when cooked. The flesh is crisp and has a balanced acidic yet mildly sweet flavor with nuances of strawberry, citrus, and cotton candy.

Seasons/Availability

Mountain Rose apples are available in the fall.

Current Facts

Mountain Rose apples are a red-fleshed apple variety and a member of the Rosacea family, species Malus domestica. This apple gets its name from the fact that it is grown near Mount Hood in Oregon, and because it has brilliant rosy red flesh.

Nutritional Value

Apples are rich in dietary fiber, specifically pectin which has been show to reduce cholesterol and slow glucose metabolism in diabetics. They also contain Vitamins A and C as well as trace amounts of Vitamin B, most of which can be found in the apple’s skin.

Applications

Mountain Rose apples will maintain their sweet flavor and vibrant color even when cooked, so they add an extra pop to many traditional apple recipes. Combine with white-fleshed apples and bake into a pie or crisp. Slice thin and layer atop tarts, pizzas, and pastries. Slow cook to make pink applesauce and preserves, or sauté and serve atop pork, chicken, or duck. Slow to brown, Mountain Rose apples are perfect for adding a splash of color to coleslaw, vegetable salads, or as an accompaniment to cheese or chocolate.

Ethnic/Cultural Info

One of only a handful of red-fleshed apples, the Mountain Rose gets a lot of attention. Modern commercial varieties generally have white or yellow flesh, so apples with a pink or red color represent something unusual and exceptional.

Geography/History

The Mountain Rose apple was first grown in Western Oregon, though it is unclear where it originated. Still relatively new to the market today, the Mountain Rose is grown exclusively in the Mount Hood River Valley apple region of Oregon. Hood River Organics is one of the only farms to produce this apple.
