I have been using this new Skin Aqua sunscreen for about 3 weeks now, and I can say with confidence this is a marked improvement from last years regular gel. The gel itself is much thicker than the gel from last year, and as a result is far easier to form a solid layer over the face. It also leaves the exact same slightly glowy finish and does not burn my eyes.
There has been some controversy about the Skin Aqua sunscreens and their splotchy application that becomes apparent under a UV camera, and I have confidence that this sunscreen alleviates this problem. Something that I noticed when using the 2019 gel, is when I was applying the sunscreen, the more I rubbed it in the more that seemed to come off of my face which could be a reason of splotchy application?? Even though I think this issue is easily resolved by applying smaller layers over each-other rather than all at once, I think part of the problem was the gel being so thin and watery, even more so than the Biore Aqua Rich Watery Essence from personal experience. This gel is so thick I have to jolt the bottle to get to the nozzle because it will settle in the bottom. As a result, I can tell with confidence that I am getting a far more robust layer, and the gel gold stays on my face.
This seems to have better UVA protection than the 2019 gel as well. Despite Uvinol T150 being removed, Uvinal A Plus is now higher up in the ingredient’s list. My face has gotten noticeably paler since using this.
I think the Gel Gold is a replacement of the Sarafit UV essence that was discontinued last year based off ingredients list and the way Rohto is advertising this stuff. Interestingly, I have read that the Sarafit shows great coverage on a UV Camera. On Rohto’s website, they are now claiming this is the strongest sunscreen in the Skin Aqua line up now. Rohto’s website also explains that this sunscreen has “Block Veil Technology” that will spread the sunscreen more evenly on the skin with higher adherence.
Overall, I think this sunscreen addresses the concerns of last years gel and apparent splotchiness and uneven coverage. This one is much more tenacious, you can just tell. For those who were fans of the Sarafit, I think this is a great replacement.
Edit: Forgot to add that I am on Differin as well. The fact that I have gotten gradually paler while being on a retinoid is a good indication of fair UVA protection of the gel gold.
