On the face of it, the Asus VivoBook S15 has the makings of a solid mid-range laptop. For anyone upgrading from an older machine, the attractions include a 15.6in IPS display with slim bezels and wide viewing angles, a 7th Gen Intel Core processor, SSD storage, USB Type-C, and a form factor that is thin, light and easy on the eye.

This healthy set of ingredients is enhanced by the upcoming arrival of an 8th Gen refresh that has seen the cost of current model slashed from £800 to £620.

A reasonable bargain, then? Perhaps, though there are a few niggling issues to be aware of. The chassis doesn’t feel as good as it looks, the keyboard and trackpad are average, there’s no touchscreen option, the built-in battery is relatively small, and the timid GeForce 940MX does little to enhance the laptop’s appeal.

Bottom line: looking for a low-cost 15.6in laptop upgrade? If none of the above caveats are considered deal breakers, the Asus VivoBook S15 offers an enjoyable screen and capable everyday performance without breaking the bank.
