Short Season Vegetable Varieties for Alaska

Many varieties of vegetables, when grown in arctic and sub-arctic areas, out-perform their counterparts in warm climates. These varieties include Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Edible Pod Peas, Lettuce, Peas, Radishes, Rutabaga, Swiss Chard, and Turnips. Because of the long sunny days and rapid plant growth, vegetables grown during Alaska’s long days have a higher sugar content so they are sweeter and more succulent than their counterparts grown in warm areas with shorter days. These varieties grow best in cool climates and are grown in warmer climates during very early spring and fall when the weather is cooler.

We also offer varieties of seed for traditionally warm-climate crops that have been tested in Alaska and proven to grow satisfactorily. These varieties will perform in the warmer parts of Alaska, in select warm locations or in greenhouses and include Green Beans, Sweet Corn, Cucumbers, Peppers, Pumpkin, Zucchini and Tomatoes. If a variety performs best indoors or intended for greenhouse production, it will be stated in the product description.
