Skin Aqua Review: UV Moisture Milk and BB Cream Perfect Matte

Okay remember on my previous post I said that putting on separate SPF product and make up base is inconvenient for me, and that I hadn’t found SPF product and make up base which textures complement each other? Well this post will talk about just that.

I often finish my skin care and make up products around the same time, which is bad for my money because then I’ll have to buy everything at once, but also exciting because I can pick up an entirely different haul. This time, I ran out of my sunblock and BB Cream. Usually, I use sunblock when I’m at home but if I go out I always use BB Cream because I need the coverage. As you know, I tried Hada Labo CC Cream but I ended up giving it to my mother. I don’t hate it, I really don’t; it’s just I didn’t find it helpful since the longevity was so poor in my opinion and like I said before, I prefer not to retouch my makeup during the day. So, my journey to find a new make up base that suits me continued.

With work deadlines all around the corner, I really wasn’t in the mood to do some deep research and price comparison. Hence, I turned to the first product that came into my mind, the sister of Hada Labo CC Cream: Skin Aqua BB Cream. I said sister because they are both produced by the same company: Rohto. Too bad I can’t do direct comparison because my mom is in Bali right now and she brought the Hada Labo CC Cream with her.

As for the SPF, I ended up buying the UV Moisture Milk, also from Skin Aqua. Let’s talk about the BB Cream first, but if you want to skip ahead to the UV Moisture Milk review, just scroll down.

Packaging
The packaging is really similar to Hada Labo CC Cream. (Quite) exciting box with boring white tube inside. There’s 20gr of product inside.

Ingredients

The ingredients are listed on the back of the box, along with the claims and the direction but it was hard to take a clear, readable picture of it since the box is metallic, so I’ll just type it here for you 🙂 (fingers crossed I read them all and type them all correctly).

Pour sufficient amount of product onto palm. Then smooth it evenly onto cleansed face.

The BB Cream has only one shade. On my face, before I even it out, it looks yellowish. The texture was creamy but not too thick – I think almost the same with its sister, Hada Labo Ultimate Anti Aging CC Cream. Many reviews of this BB Cream mentioned that the BB Cream was hard to blend, well maybe yes if you apply it using your fingers or some dense brush. I don’t directly use my hands or fingers like the direction says – just like I did with the Hada Labo CC Cream, I also use my Etude House Any Air Puff to apply the BB Cream onto my face. I tried to apply the BB Cream using my Real Techniques brush once but the finish just wasn’t as smooth as when I use the air puff. I think it’s because the BB Cream is so matte and sets really fast – it’s not slippery enough to be dragged across the skin using brush. When I used the brush, the finish wasn’t nice and even either. Instead, patting the product onto my skin using air puff gives a really smooth coverage.

As you can see on the ingredients list, there is no perfume or fragrance in this product, yet it does has smell. Personally, I don’t like it – it smells like chemical, I think. But I don’t really mind either because the smell disappear quickly after being applied onto skin.

Performance

The claims are also in Bahasa Indonesia but I’ll translate them for you.

On my face, the finish is almost completely matte. I still add some powder on top of it, though, if I plan to go out. I use Marcks in Creme or Ben Nye in Pretty Pink, but I think Marcks somehow complement it better, maybe because their shades are closer to to each other than the Ben Nye. Anyway, adding some powder on top of the BB Cream doesn’t make my skin looks cakey.

The coverage of the BB Cream was almost the same with Hada Labo CC Cream, sheer but buildable to almost medium coverage. It cancels out my redness, giving me an even, my-skin-but-better look but my dark spots are still visible, though not quite as noticeable. The shade looks very natural on my skin. My boyfriend even complimented me twice, saying that my skin looked clearer. Usually he could tell if I’m wearing make up but when I used this BB Cream, he was totally deceived, LOL. For everyday use, I’m satisfied enough with the coverage. My skin has been in a pretty good condition lately and I can tolerate not having a perfect-looking skin every day, so I don’t mind the sheer coverage. But if my skin was more troubled than this, I know for fact that I would want a much better coverage. You see, one of the main reasons why I stick with Skin79 for so long is because even when my skin is behaving badly, the BB Cream can cover it really well. There were days when I DEPEND my life on it.

Okay now for the exciting part: the oil control and longevity.

This BB Cream has surpassed my expectation. It keeps my face matte for a full four hours, which is more than any combination of primer, make up base, and powder that I’ve ever used could do. After that, I need to blot my face from time to time but my face still looks presentable for around seven hours since it was first applied. I am HOOKED, big time.

Yet there’s still a downside to it. This BB Cream is so matte, it doesn’t hydrate my skin enough. My skin is easily dehydrated, especially because now it’s raining season here so the weather gets very cold. My skin becomes dry and this BB Cream doesn’t help at all.  To fix it, I applied Bioderma Hydrabio Serum first before applying the BB Cream but I only had it in 15ml-sample size that I got from when I bought my first Bioderma Hydrabio H2O. The full size is quite expensive so I was looking for another alternative product to serve as a primer to this BB Cream. Then I remembered that when I did a quick research on this BB Cream, many bloggers said that they wanted to try the BB Cream because the they’ve tried the sunscreens and feel satisfied about them.

So I did some more research – this time about the sunscreens. There are for variants: UV Mild Milk, UV Moisture Milk, UV Whitening Milk, and UV Moisture Gel. I was tempted to buy the Whitening Milk because it has Arbutin in it but at the end I decided to buy the Moisture Milk because it has the highest SPF (thus longer protection) among the four variants, and PA+++ instead of just PA++.

Now let’s take a closer look, shall we.

Packaging

The box is much simpler than the BB Cream box, with picture of the bottle on the front side of it. The product itself comes in a slim, pale blue bottle, containing 40 gr of product. The bottle has a screw cap. When the cap is off, the shape of the top part of the bottle is similar to one in eye drops bottle.

Thank God this one is readable. Here’s the COSDNA analysis on the ingredients.

Appearance and Smell

Sunscreen Texture collage

The sunscreen has runny, milky texture. On my skin, it feels silky and it absorbs to my skin quickly. I don’t have to wait too long to apply the next stage of my routine, which is the BB Cream. It doesn’t leave white cast either, despite having titanium dioxide in the ingredients. And unlike the BB Cream, this sunscreen is almost, if not completely, odorless.

So here are the claims.

Let me translate them for you

Skin Aqua UV Moisture Milk

Moisturizing, brightening, and giving double protections against UV-A and UV-B.

  • Improved Hyaluronic Acid (AcHA): gives extra moisture and softness to skin.
  • Collagen: maintaining the skin elasticity.
  • Vitamin B5 and E: nourish the skin.
  • SPF 50+ : 51 times longer protection against UV-B rays that can cause the skin to turn red because of sunburn, compared to unprotected skin.
  • PA+++ : optimal protection against UV-A rays that can cause premature aging, appearance of fine lines and dark spots, and skin darkening.
  • Water based formula: so it does not feel sticky and absorbs quickly, feels light on the skin.
  • No coloring and fragrance.
  • Can be used as make up base.
  • Formulated for Asian skin.

Direction

  • Cleanse the face with facial wash, then dry it. Pour sufficient amount of Skin Aqua onto palm, and apply it to the face gently until fully absorbed. After that, apply make up as usual.
  • For optimal result, use every day and re-apply after contact with sweat, water, or if the skin is exposed to sun for a long time.

Shake well before use.

About the Improve Hyaluronic Acid (AcHA) and collagen, they’re both placed quite later in the ingredients list so I don’t really count on them. Nevertheless, i feel like the sunscreen moisturizes my skin enough as long as I’m indoor and NOT using the air conditioner.

I haven’t went out under the sun long enough to really put the SPF 50+ to test. I spend most of my time indoor, only a little time outdoor, and for that condition, this product is good enough.

This sunscreen does feels light and not sticky. It doesn’t have oil control, but it doesn’t make my skin oily either. I love the feeling on my skin. Most moisturizers, sunscreens, or sunblocks feels heavier and heavier on the skin with time but not this one. Actually, this applies to the BB Cream too.

The sunscreen can definitely be used as make up base. It leaves my skin silky, giving a smooth base for makeup. With this, I don’t experience any horrible experiences like I had with any other combination of SPF products and make up base, like my make up melted down unappealingly or the mixture sunk into my pores. Yuck.

Now let me show you how these two products – Skin Aqua UV Moisture Milk and BB Cream Perfect Matte look on my face.

face

Those three pictures were taken with no filter and I only edit them to make a collage. You can see that the UV Moisture Milk doesn’t make any difference to skin visually, which means to coverage, no oil control, and no white cast. You can also see how the BB Cream evens out my skin tone nicely, but it doesn’t really covers my dark spots, like the ones on my forehead, and on my cheeks, if you look close enough.

A little behind the scene story (feel free to skip this part, it’s not related to the review), taking pictures of my face using these facial products is an actual effort. You see, I wear hijab, therefore, the process of taking those three pictures went on like this: I washed my face and dried it, put on my hijab, took pictures, took off my hijab, applied the UV Moisture Milk, put on my hijab, took another pictures, took off my hijab, applied the BB Cream, put on my hijab again, took the final pictures. Actually, it was fun for me but I don’t like being watched while doing something like that, lol. That’s why it took awhile for me to finish this post. I had to take the pictures when I was sure no one was around to bother me, and I definitely could not do it on the weekdays because I’m always rushing to work.

Conclusion

I have sensitive, dehydrated skin which appears oily. I love, love, love the combination of these two products because it moisturizes my skin, controls my oiliness, keeps my skin looking presentable for quite a long time (good longevity), and doesn’t cause me to break out. They come with affordable price, too, around IDR 50,000. The only downside is the sheer coverage of the BB Cream, thus I’m satisfied with these products as long as my skin is in a pretty good condition (minimal to no acne).
