The titanium Apple Watch series 5 is not the lightest
The titanium Apple Watch series 5 is not the lightest in the whole range. Apple advertises its new titanium finish as a watch with an excellent strength-to-weight ratio. That’s true. Titanium is stronger than aluminum, for example, but it also weighs more. Let’s see the weights of the entire range of the new 5 series.
Light if it is, it all depends on what you compare it to. The truth is that in a matter of weight, the titanium Apple Watch is right between the stainless steel, the heaviest, at 40 g, and the aluminum, the lightest, at 30 g.
Comparison of weights
Let’s look at the weights of the 5mm Apple Watch series 40. according to material:
- Aluminum: 30,8 g.
- Titanium: 35,1 g.
- Ceramic: 39,7 g.
- Stainless steel: 40,6 g.
And then the same comparison with the 44 mm. :
- Aluminum: 36,5 g.
- Titanium: 41,7 g.
- Ceramic: 46,7 g.
- Stainless steel: 47,8 g.
The titanium used by Apple is not just any material. The new body of the Apple Watch has special characteristics to make it more durable over time.
Apple says in its advertising on titanium: “It is only found in the most exclusive watches. Titanium is exceptionally strong, lightweight, and beautiful. For our natural titanium finish, we developed a special surface coating that prevents yellowing, smudging, and fingerprints. “
Apple’s special titanium surface is also visually different from stainless steel with a natural brushing pattern available in two finishes. Steel has a shiny, mirror-like finish compared to the matte appearance of titanium.
The aluminum finish is the lightest of all, and also the cheapest. The advantage of titanium is that being a lightweight material, it gives the watch a high-end look.
From personal experience, I can tell you that years ago I had (and still keep) a Duward analog watch with a titanium body and strap, and it is a marvel of material. Very light and very resistant to scratches. On the other hand, my original steel Apple Watch is three years old, and within two weeks of wearing it I began to see small marks. It is a very soft metal, and being shiny mirror-like, you can see the scratches a lot. I leave it there.
