The problem is with how Facebook cover photo size changes, especially the one for Facebook groups. It changes too frequently, including its display on different devices ranging from computers (desktops) to tabs to phones.

In late 2017, the Facebook cover photo size was changed. Less than a couple of weeks later, it changed again.

Then comes the Facebook banner size that Facebook revealed. It didn’t work either.

So, what’s the way forward? Can you beat Facebook at their own game?

You bet! You can beat Facebook at their own game.

Your Facebook group will get all it needs, including the right group cover size.

But before we go further, let’s discuss what Facebook groups are.

A Facebook group is one of the important features of Facebook that allows its user to create a special group to build and nurture an audience.

Facebook groups are an essential marketing tool for businesses on social media.

This means you can achieve a lot in your business by taking advantage of Facebook groups.

According to a 2022 report by Statista, Facebook has an estimated 2.93 billion active users monthly.

2017 made it 13 years of Facebook’s existence, and it’s the same year the platform surpassed 2 billion active users.

Facebook groups are extremely useful when it comes to creating an online community.

You can build value-based groups for your clients on Facebook.

Facebook groups are great ways to build relationships with an audience, including existing clients. You can offer new and exclusive information to the members of your Facebook group. If you have new sales coming up, they will be the first to know and hear about it.

There are so many details that go into creating a Facebook group. Some of them are more important than others. But Facebook group cover photos are one of the most important.

It’s the face of your Facebook group.

It’s the first hint people have about what your Facebook group represents. Hence, your Facebook group cover photo shouldn’t be treated later.

According to a report, more than 52% of people who use social media said they’ve loved and interacted with Facebook groups before, and they did so because of the cover photo.

If you take a look at any Facebook group worth its name, you’ll see how the cover photo dominates the group. The first thing your eyes are drawn to is the cover photo.

When someone finds your Facebook group, your cover photo size is what they quickly notice, and it influences them to categorise your group and what it represents.

Hence, you need to ensure that whatever photo you use is both professional and stunning.

According to Facebook’s official feature recommendation, the recommended display size of a Facebook group cover photo for desktop computers is 1,640 pixels by 856 pixels (or a 1.91:1 ratio). It is recommended not to place important information in the grey area, as illustrated in the image below. This is because group visitors and group members may not be able to see the grey areas on a mobile device.

Facebook will crop out the left and right sides on a mobile device. On the contrary, it will crop out the top and bottom of your cover photo.

Hence, to ensure that no vital detail of your Facebook cover photo is cut out, you may need to keep the text and graphics within a smaller zone dimension called the Safe Zone dimension, as shown below:

Ensure to use the dimensions of 820px wide by 360px for your cover photo because Facebook will automatically crop it for viewing on mobile or desktop.

To avoid losing the quality of your cover photo, make sure you download your picture as a PNG because that’s actually what Facebook recommends.

Facebook Cover Photo Size in Inches

According to Facebook, desktop computers display cover photos at a resolution of 820 pixels wide by 312 pixels high, while mobile devices display them at 640 pixels wide by 360 pixels high.

How do we convert these into inches? We first need to know how to convert pixels into inches.

You must divide pixels by resolution to convert them to inches. For instance, a printed version of a 600 x 400-pixel image viewed at 96 DPI will measure 6.25 x 4.17 inches.

You need to know the image width in both pixels and inches to calculate the resolution of an image in DPI. Next, divide the image width in pixels by the image width in inches. For instance, a 600-pixel wide by 6.25-inch wide image has a resolution of 96 DPI.

1920×1080 is the normal standard for Full HD resolution, and that is 72DPI.

Hence, if the size of a monitor is the same as the above, then we will divide the Facebook cover photo size for the desktop by the corresponding DPI.

That gives us:

1920/72 by 1080/72 = 26.67 inches by 15 inches

This means that the Facebook cover photo size, which is 820 pixels x 312 pixels at 96 DPI, is 8.54 inches x 3.25 inches.

The following are more resolutions which are in pixels converted to inches.

Facebook Cover Photo Size in 2022

The Facebook cover photo size is 2022 1640pixel by 856 pixels. This is according to their recommendation. Although, it didn’t work anywhere when it was first announced in November 2017.

Good enough, it works now in 2022 on mobile display only as at the time I wrote this.

But this is also mostly based on the device you’re talking about, as previously discussed.

In addition to using the appropriate cover photo size (which is so crucial it has its section, so please take note of that! ), there are some fundamental best practices you should adhere to when creating your original group artwork.

Use High-Quality Images

When it comes to design, keeping things simple can often be the best option because it puts the focus where it belongs—front and center, with little distraction.

Sprinkle a Touch of Your Brand

It is vital to show that the group is yours and your business’s.

Hence, ensure that your brand shows in the cover photo.

Watch out for Mobile-only Cropping

Cropping in mobile is a significant issue. Even if you use the ideal Facebook group cover photo size, the topmost and bottom-most of your image will be cropped out on mobile. Therefore, ensure you leave those portions of your image free of anything crucial to avoid anything crucial (like key text or design elements that explain what you’re doing) from being chopped off. Give the area some whitespace or empty design elements that won’t matter if they are cut.

Add Some Exposition

One goal of the Facebook group cover photo is to attract and pique the interest of potential new members. In some cases, combining a strong visual element with text that precisely describes what your organization offers is the best way to accomplish this.

Final Thoughts

One of the first things that potential members will see when they visit your Facebook group is the cover photo you select. Particularly when a group is just getting started, it can set the tone for the whole thing. It’s significant, and you should consider it an integral component of your group’s branding. Additionally, if that group has any connection to your company, it will have an immediate impact on your company’s branding.

The cover photo you use should reflect the essence of the group as a whole, so keep in mind that simple graphics can produce excellent results. Always ensure that you’re using the ideal Facebook group cover photo size by following the best practices.
