Apple’s new A14 chip details indicate better battery life for upcoming iPhone 12 series | Tech News
Apple did not announce the new iPhone 12 lineup in its Apple Event last evening and instead revealed the new Apple Watch Series 6, the Apple Watch SE, the iPad 8th Gen and the iPad Air 4 along with Apple One subscription bundle. But as a run-up to one of the most awaited smartphones of 2020, Apple did reveal some details about the A14 Bionic chipset that’s going to power the entire iPhone 12 lineup.
The new Apple A14 Bionic is built on the new 5nm process and outdoes its Android competition that still uses the 7nm SoCs. The chip comes with a six-core CPU and a quad-core GPU. However, Apple compared the new A14 with the older A12 Bionic chip instead of the A13, oddly. Compared to the A12 Bionic chip, the new A14 brings in 40% CPU improvements and a 30% boost in graphics.

Given that last year’s A13 Bionic brought in a 20% bump in speed across the board over the A12 from the previous year, math estimates that the new A14 should have a 17% faster CPU and an 8% better GPU than the A13.
While these number bumps are not massive, some of these improved figures brought in thanks to the new manufacturing process actually contributed towards lower power consumption on the device.

Sticking to tradition, Apple did not talk about clock speeds and promised the same 10-hour battery life on the new iPad Air 4 as it was on the earlier iteration. However, the new iPad Air comes with a 28.6Wh battery as compared to the 30.8Wh on the older model. This indicates an 8% lower power consumption.
While it remains to be seen how much of this drop is due to the new screen and how much is because of the new chipset, it at least predicts a better battery life on the upcoming iPhone 12 models.
