Aqua look unrecognisable 25 years on from smash hit song Barbie Girl

They took over the airwaves worldwide with their 1997 hit Barbie Girl.

And Nineties band Aqua sent fans into a frenzy as they reunited in the recording studio to film a Top Of The Pops special and shared the snap to Instagram.

The band- Lene Nystrøm, René Dif, and keyboardist Søren Rasted-  looked dramatically different from the pop heyday, having retired their wacky and wonderful hairstyles.

Singer Lene, 48, opted for a much more muted jet black hair colour in comparison to her bright pink locks, while Søren had ditched his bright yellow spiky hairstyle for a slicked black look and beard.

They captioned the post: ‘We had a great talk with Ryan Saunders from @bbc for their “Top Of The Pops 1994-1997” show the other day. This took us down memory lane. Woooow! Your first AQUA-moment was?’

The band,  formed in 1989, was comprised of Lene, René, a spikey-haired Søren and guitarist Claus Norreen.

Fans soon took to the comment section, feeling nostalgic about the band and their signature tune Barbie Girl which was a No. 1 hit in 14 countries when it was released in April 1997.

One wrote: ‘The queen never aged,’ while another added: ‘You guys look great’.

A third follower chimed: ‘You have held up well. Still like to hear you.’

A fourth fan said: ‘PLEASE NEW MUSIC’.

After the success of Barbie Girl, Aqua went on to produce three studio albums, Aquarium in 1997, Aquarius in 2000 and Megalomania in 2011.

Back in 2019, Lene said the band were working on new music.

She said in the interview with TMZ: ‘We’re working on new music but we are our own toughest judges. We will not release anything until it’s absolutely perfect.

‘We are crossing our fingers that something amazing will come out of it.’

Last July, the band released a cover of I Am What I Am for Copenhagen Pride.
