Hailing from Taiwan, Acer is one of the world’s most recognized laptop brands. They are known for their wide range of laptop designs; cutting-edge technology; and competitive prices. If you’re thinking of purchasing a new laptop, you can’t go wrong with Acer.

To help you choose the right model, we’ve created a Buyer’s Guide. The Guide addresses the following topics:

Why is Acer a brand of choice?

If you’re looking for a laptop, Acer is a great place to start!

Here are three reasons why you should consider an Acer:

  • Acer produces laptops for all needs – one of the main reasons why Acer is a brand of choice for many Filipinos is its large range of laptops. Acer caters to all market segments, from high-end gaming, workstations, mid-tier general-purpose to budget laptops. Besides the range of specifications at different price points, you’ll also have multiple spec options to choose from depending on whether you are a power user or someone who simply needs a spare laptop for home.
  • Acer pushes the boundaries in design and technology – Acer has always invested in innovation in its machines. Technologies the brand has developed include the Ezel Aero hinge (allowing the screen to swivel forward and backward while maximizing airflow) and the HyperDrift keyboard (which allows the keyboard to slide back, revealing a cooling system for the laptop). Acer will continue to surprise with its intuitive designs.
  • Acer has a great line of gaming laptops – if you’re looking for a gaming laptop, Acer is a great choice with both the Predator and Nitro series. The Predator series is the mainstream flagship gaming laptop while the Nitro caters more towards budget-conscious gamers.

What specs to look out for and compare when choosing an Acer laptop?

Acer laptops come in all shapes and sizes. It’s important you choose the right one for your needs and budget. Looking at specs can be intimidating with all the jargon and specifications. To help you, here is a guide to which specs to look out for and compare when selecting a model.

Performance

The most important aspect to look for in a laptop is its performance. The basic specs which determine performance include RAM, CPU, GPU, and internal storage.

  • RAM or Random Access Memory – is the amount of data in gigabytes (GB) your laptop can store for executing tasks. This is important because the RAM functions as a bridge between the laptop’s hard drive (long-term storage) and processors. If there’s not enough RAM storage, information needs to be moved back to the hard drive which slows the machine.

When buying a laptop, 4GB RAM will be sufficient for a casual user. If you have the extra money, however, go for 8GB, 16GB or higher. High-end gaming laptop and mobile workstations can even go as high as 32GB to 64GB RAM.

  • CPU or Central Processing Unit – is considered the “brain” of the laptop responsible for executing tasks. The CPU is divided into several “cores” which can execute tasks simultaneously. As a general rule, the more cores a CPU has, the more information is processed at the same time, the better the performance.

To help you determine what CPU specs you need, here is a quick guide:

Applications

Recommended CPU

Number of Cores

High End Workstation / Gaming

Intel Core i5/i7 H series

6 – 8

Mid-range productivity / All-arounder

Intel Core i7 U series/ Intel Core i5 or i7 G series

AMD Ryzen Mobile series

2 – 4

Budget-friendly

  • GPU or Graphics Processing Unit – is a processing unit dedicated to handling the display. It serves as an extra muscle to your CPU, allowing the laptop to easily support graphic-intensive applications. Including 3D modeling, digital art, and high-spec gaming.

Today there are two major GPU (or graphic card) providers: Nvidia and AMD.

  • Nvidia – known for their top-selling graphic cards, are considered the cream-of-the-crop in GPUs. Nvidia cards supports Ray Tracing, a rendering technique that produces realistic lighting effects. On the downside, Nvidia cards are expensive.
  • AMD – known for their affordable mid- to low-tier GPUs. For example, the mid-range RX570 has the sane performance as Nvidia’s GTX1650 but at a more competitive price. To compete with Ray Tracing, AMD developed the AMD Radeon Image Sharpening Technology to enhance video quality without compromising performance.

Both GPU providers also supply to OEM (original equipment manufacturers) brands like EVGA, Gigabyte, and PNY. These brands are often the choice for mid-tier and budget laptops.

Which GPU you need depends on your graphics performance requirements. Here is a quick guide to help:

Needs

Nvidia

AMD

High-end

GeForce RTX3080,3070, 2080 or 2060

Radeon RX6700 XT or Radeon RX6800

Mid-range

GeForce RTX 1660

Radeon RX 5600 XT or 5700

Low-end

EVGA GeForce GTX 1650 Super, PNY GTX 1650

Gigabyte Radeon RX5500 XT, RX580 to RX550

Some laptops come with a CPU with an integrated GPU. If you know you don’t need your laptop to perform graphic-intensive tasks, a separate GPU is not needed. But keep in mind that a combined CPU / GPU will be sharing the same memory to both process data and display images. The machine may struggle when running graphic-intensive apps.

  • Internal storage – this refers to how much information your laptop can store when the power is switched off. This internal storage is used to hold your laptop’s software (including the operating system), documents and media (such as photos and videos). For mobile workstations and gaming laptops, we recommend at least 500GB to 1TB. For light users and chromebooks, a good 128GB of storage should be sufficient.

When considering internal storage we’d recommend an SSD (solid-state drives) over hard-disk drives. SSDs run three-times faster than hard disk drives, are less clunkier and less prone to failure.

Screen

Acer laptop screen

The screen is important when choosing a laptop, especially if you are a content creator or a heavy gamer.

There are four specs to consider when comparing screens: size, resolution, refresh rate, and brightness.

  • Size – is measured in either centimeters or inches diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner (not including the bezels). Laptops screens can range in size from portable 11-inchers to less portable 15- to 18-inch gaming and workstations. Size of the screen depends on your preference. If you need to be mobile, we’d recommend not going above a 12-14-inch screen.
  • Resolution –refers to the number of pixels horizontally and vertically displayed by the screen. The higher the number of pixels, the better resolution. The standard laptop resolution today is in HD (1366 x 768) and Full HD (1920 x 1080). Anything that is above Full HD is often reserved on gaming laptops or workstations. These resolutions include 3K, 4K, and even 8K QHD, UHD screens.
  • Refresh rate – is another spec important for content creators and gamers. Refresh rates refer to how many times your screen updates every second. For example, a laptop screen with a 90Hz refresh rate would refresh its screen 90 times a second.

Higher screen refresh makes for better motion-handling, meaning visual media would appear smoother and more fluid. 60Hz to 90Hz are standard on low to mid-tier laptops. If you are a power user we’d recommend going for laptops with options for 100Hz or 144Hz refresh rates.

  • Brightness – this spec details with how many nits (measurement of luminosity) your screen can give off. The higher the number of nits, the brighter your screen would be. Typical screen brightness for laptops range upward from 300 nits. Anything below that would be considered dim and may not work well in bright locations.

Keep in mind that screen specification also affects your battery life. A high resolution, high refresh rate, and high brightness screen would drain battery quicker than a laptop with a smaller screen operating at a slower refresh rate.

Battery Life

Acer laptop battery life

Shutterstock

Battery life is a measure of how long your laptop can last in a single charge. Most laptop spec sheets describe battery size in either watt-hours (Whr) or milliampere-hour (mAh). Either way, the higher the number, the more capacity the battery can hold, the longer the battery will last between charging.

But battery life also depends on the power consumption of the laptop. This depends on hardware specifications and your usage pattern. For example, using your laptop with the screen at maximum brightness, would use your batteries faster than if you used the laptop with the screen set at a lower brightness. High-end CPUs and GPUs would need more power than lower-tier hardware. This is the main reason why gaming laptops and workstations are designed to remain on a desk with a power outlet.

If you’re a mobile user, and battery life is a key-purchase criteria, our recommendation is to read in-depth reviews on the laptop you’re considering. Many tech reviewers do in-depth stress tests using various settings to give you real life assessment of battery life (more realistic than the information provided by the manufacturer).

Form Factor

Laptops come in many shapes and sizes. In general, laptops fall into two build categories: clamshell and 2-in-1:

  • Clamshell – are the established laptop build. Clamshells typically have two parts (keyboard and screen) connected by a 180-degree hinge. Thanks to its stable build, clamshells can accommodate cooling systems that a high-end GPU and CPU would need. Because of this, they tend to be heavier.
  • 2-in-1 –are laptops where the keyboard is detachable from the screen or connected with a 360-degree hinge. This design allows you to transform your laptop into a tablet. To maintain this flexible build, 2-in-1s need to be thin and therefore, would need to downsize CPU, GPU, and cooling systems. Because of this, these laptops can sometimes have heating issues.

Other factors you need to consider are the number of ports, the keyboard, and special features. Different needs

  • Ports – find a laptop that has at least 2 USB ports, either a combination of a USB 3.0 or a USB-C. For office laptops and workstations, and HDMI is also important. For gamers, an ethernet cable and a 3.5mm headphone jack should be present.
  • Keyboards – a laptop keyboard should be solid, tactile, and a good 1.2mm travel (distance between a key at rest and full depression). Find a laptop that has a comfortable distance between keys as well as a good mousepad placement that suits your typing patterns.
