How Old Are the One Piece Characters: Ages Chart & Birthdays

One Piece has a wide cast playing their own part important part in the show’s story.

Most of these characters have had their ages and birthdays confirmed within some form of One Piece media, while others can be guessed based on context clues.

Monkey D. Luffy is first introduced to One Piece at 7 years old, though only briefly. For the main portion of the show, Luffy is 17 years old. Then after a 2 year time skip between seasons 14 and 15, he turns 19 years old.

Roronoa Zoro is a few years older than Luffy at 19 years old, turning 21 after the time skip. Nami is in between her two crew-mates at 18 and then 20

The oldest main character in One Piece is Brook, at 88 years old and then 90. However, Brook is a skeleton and so technically not fully alive.

The youngest main character also happens to be the smallest. Tony Tony Chopper is 15 years old when he debuts in One Piece and 17 after the time skip.

Captain Luffy of the Straw Hat crew may be a little young for a pirate captain, but he is highly respected by his crew and the various Warlords, Emperors, and fellow captains he meets on his adventures.

On a quest to find the legendary Pirate King’s treasure, Luffy realizes that the real treasure isn’t always gold and diamonds – though they aren’t bad either!

Monkey D. Luffy – May 5th

Monkey D. Luffy Monkey D. Luffy

When we first see Monkey D. Luffy he is 7 years old, but this is only for a few scenes in season 1, episode 1, and then again in a handful of flashbacks. Luffy’s story really takes off in the show’s first episode when he is 17 years old. Then, after the 2 year time skip between seasons 14 and 15, Luffy is 19 years old.

May 5th is Japan’s Children’s Day, a whole day dedicated to children. It is generally a celebration of children’s happy, youthful, and eccentric personalities, all of which Luffy embodies.

Even when he is in his late teens and leading the Straw Hats as Captain, Luffy remains goofy and childlike. This makes him fearless almost to a fault, though he can be a stable leader for his crew when he needs to be.

Roronoa Zoro – November 11th

Roronoa Zoro

Roronoa Zoro

Before the time skip, Roronoa Zoro is 19 years old and then is 21 at the beginning of season 15. Though there is only a 2 year difference between Zoro and Luffy, they could not be more the opposite of each other.

Where Luffy is carefree and giddy, Zoro is fuelled by a commitment to both the Straw Hats and his ambition to be the best swordsman there ever was. His seriousness and strategic thinking help to keep Luffy in check, but Zoro is also quick to jump into a situation if Luffy has lost his way, no matter how stupid it may seem.

Zoro was the first of Luffy’s crew that he recruited and has remained a loyal member ever since. His experience as a bounty hunter allows Zoro to keep Luffy and the crew safe from capture… most of the time.

Nami – July 3rd

NamiNami

Nami is 18 years old when Luffy recruits her to join the Straw Hats. After the time skip, she is 20 years old but remains the compassionate, cut-throat older sister figure she was in seasons 1 – 14.

Compared to many of the other pirates, Nami is at a disadvantage. She doesn’t have the same strength or skills as most of the crew, but she is extremely intelligent. This is what sets her apart in a world dominated by men. Nami’s smarts and desire to see the world in a way that nobody has before means that she can hold her own in an otherwise brutal occupation despite being younger than a lot of the pirates.

Usopp – April 1st

UsoppUsopp

Usopp is the same age as Luffy at 17 years old when he is first recruited by Luffy and then 19 after the time skip. But as close and brotherly-like as Usopp and Luffy become, they could not be more different.

Luffy’s courage convinces Usopp to join the Straw Hat crew and start his quest to find his father and become a pirate just like him. Usopp finds Luffy so inspiring as he himself is a coward. Joining the Straw Hats and following along with a lot of Luffy’s dangerous plans does force Usopp to gain some confidence, but he would much prefer to do things the easy way or not at all.

Sanji – March 2nd

SanjiSanji

Sanji and Zoro are just as matched in age as they are in height, with Sanji also being 19 at the beginning of One Piece and then 21 after the time skip. Sanji prefers to present himself as more mature than Zoro with a smart suit and taking a sterner outlook on life.

Though Sanji is the Straw Hat cook and not a ranked member like Zoro, he is still a useful part of the team and is valued highly by Luffy – primarily because of the delicious food he provides but also because of his intelligence. Sanji is a lot more expressive than Zoro, making him seem more childish despite preferring mature clothes.

Tony Tony Chopper – December 24th

Tony Tony ChopperTony Tony Chopper

At 15 years old, Tony Tony Chopper is the youngest member of the Straw Hat crew pre-time skip. After the time skip, he is 17 but appears much more immature than Luffy did when he was 17 due to being only 2’11” (88.9 cm).

Chopper is very childlike but in a different way to Luffy. For starters, he is much more emotional and idolizes the rest of the crew for the smallest acts. Even for a 15 year old, he acts way younger than he is. But after the time skip, Chopper does mature significantly and gains a better understanding of the world.

Nico Robin – February 6th

Nico RobinNico Robin

Nico Robin is much older than Luffy and the core Straw Hat crew at 28 years old (and then 30 years old from season 15 onwards). Despite being a whole decade older than the Straw Hat captain, Robin has great respect for Luffy.

At first, Robin seems to have no bond with the Straw Hat crew – she doesn’t even technically have an official role to play on the ship aside from having a vast historical knowledge which Luffy values. Robin is as compassionate as she is reserved, sometimes taking on a motherly role to younger crew members such as Chopper.

Franky – March 9th

FrankyFranky

Franky has been through a lot in the 34 years before he meets Luffy, gaining a carefree attitude toward rules – something that Luffy admires. From season 15 onwards, Franky is 36 years old and has developed a deep love for the Straw Hats even though they began their journey as foes.

Franky is amongst the older Straw Hat crew members, but he can sometimes be inappropriate, finding amusement in scandalous and perverted situations. However, his goofiness does not necessarily make Franky seem immature like some of the other crew members. Franky enjoys showing off his body and mechanics, but he is also a loyal, stable force for the Straw Hats.

Brook – April 3rd

BrookBrook

Brook is the oldest of the Straw Hats at 88 years old before the time skip and 90 years old after it. A few flashback scenes show Brook as a human 50 years before the show begins, where we see that Brook was 38 when he died.

He may now be a skeleton, but Brook still dresses like an eccentric mid-30-year-old man. However, these eccentrics lean more towards that of a gentleman, speaking in respectful tones even to his enemies. Brook also carries his love of music into his undead life, turning to it anytime he feels a lot of emotion.

Jinbe – April 2nd

JinbeJinbe

Jinbe is one of the older members of the Straw Hat crew at 44 years old when he is first recruited. He is then 46 after the 2 year time skip. Jinbe is a much more experienced pirate than Luffy, but he puts aside his own achievements to join the young captain.

Jinbe was an honored and respected captain before joining the Straw Hat crew. But once he has cut ties with his previous affiliations (such as his connections with Big Mom), Jinbe is happy to work under the considerably younger Captain Luffy as he sees the true potential Luffy has to change the pirate world.

Nefertari Vivi – February 2nd

Nefertari ViviNefertari Vivi

Nefertari Vivi is a little younger than Luffy at 16 years old and then 18 after the time skip. She is a princess, part of the royal family of Arabasta, but does not act like a spoiled noble as you might expect of a 16-year-old princess.

Instead, Vivi is determined to do the best for those she loves, including her subjects. She can be a little clueless at times about the duties of a pirate. However, the responsibilities of a ruler have been instilled in Vivi since she was a child, giving her the tools to adapt to a pirate life easily enough.

Gol D. Roger – December 31st

Gol D. RogerGol D. Roger

It is not entirely clear how old Gol D. Roger (aka the King of Pirates) would be if he were still alive in the series. However, when he died, he was confirmed to have been 53.

Roger may have died much younger than some of the other legendary pirates in One Piece, but he left a significant legacy behind that continues to outlast the Pirate King well into One Piece.

Roger is only really shown in flashbacks, but there have been several comments throughout the show that alludes to him having a similar, impulsive attitude to Luffy (though more aggressive).

Shanks – March 9th

ShanksShanks

Like Luffy, Shanks’ debut on One Piece happens well before the story begins when Shank is 27 years old. But when the main story takes place 10 years later, Shanks is 37, turning 39 at some point between seasons 14 and 15.

Shank’s personality and stories are partly what inspires Luffy to want to be a pirate in the first place. Heading his own crew – The Red Hair Pirates – Shanks remains the laid-back, cool guy that inspired Luffy even years later. Some have commented on how similar Shanks was to Luffy when he was younger, but as a 37 year old, he is less immature and more complex.

Kaidou – May 1st

KaidouKaidou

Kaidou may be approaching old age at 59 years old when he is introduced after the show’s 2 year time skip, but he certainly doesn’t appear that old.

Also known as Kaidou of the Beasts, Kaidou is an aggressive force of nature from the moment he appears on the show. He is a muscle man in every sense of the word, with a physique that doesn’t give away his older age.

Marshall D. Teach – August 3rd

Marshall D. TeachMarshall D. Teach

Marshall D. Teach (better known as Blackbeard) is introduced in season 6 of One Piece at 38 years old. After the time skip, Teach is 40 years old and becomes more of a central antagonist from season 15 onwards.

He may be well past his youth when he is introduced to One Piece, but Teach’s years of experience as a powerful pirate have made him overconfident and bordering on cocky. That being said, Teach knows how to be a responsible leader to the Blackbeard Pirate crew. Though arguably, Luffy is a much better captain despite being decades younger than Teach.

Bartholomew Kuma – February 9th

Bartholomew KumaBartholomew Kuma

Bartholomew Kuma is already 45 years old when he debuts in One Piece, turning 47 during the 2 year time skip. Having previously been a Warlord and King, Kuma has already endured a lot when the Straw Hats cross his paths.

After the 2 year time skip, the half-impaled swords and heavy collar prove how much more Kuma has had to endure. Once a kind man, Kuma has been turned into a weapon made to serve the World Government. He is left with little to no free will or memories of his years as a pirate and Revolutionary.

Trafalgar D. Water Law – October 6th

Trafalgar D. Water LawTrafalgar D. Water Law

Trafalgar D. Water Law may still be in his pirate youth at 24 years old pre-time skip (then 26 after the time skip), but he has earnt the respect of many legendary crews and pirates. So much so that he is made one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea during the time skip.

Law usually holds himself above conflict, only getting involved when it helps his own agenda. That is not to say that he is mean and cruel to those younger than him. In fact, Law holds a decent level of respect for Luffy after meeting him.

Portgas D. Ace – January 1st

Portgas D. AcePortgas D. Ace

Portgas D. Ace is barely a man when he dies before the time skip at 20 years old. He was a few years older than his adoptive younger brother Luffy but the same age as his other adoptive brother Sabo.

Ace is the biological son of Gol D. Roger, but he could not be more different from the Pirate King. Ace tended to be more impulsive and quick to anger if those he loved were insulted. Above all else, Ace found a purpose in protecting and being a good older brother to Luffy – a responsibility that many older brothers can relate to.

Sabo – March 20th

SaboSabo

Sabo makes his One Piece debut at 10 years old via several flashback scenes of him and his adoptive brothers. Then, when he is properly introduced to the show after the 2 year time skip, he is 22.

Once Sabo has regained his memories after Ace’s death, he acts much like he did when he was younger – genuinely kind and friendly. His main difference is that he has a new kind of childlikeness about him, picking up some of Luffy’s quirks. Sabo takes over Ace’s role as the responsible big brother, making him much more protective of Luffy than he was when they were both younger.

Koby – May 13th

KobyKoby

When Koby is fully introduced to the One Piece story at 16 years old (and then 18), he has dramatically changed from when we first see a younger version of him, though it is unclear how much time has passed.

Koby is not as impulsive as Luffy but has a similar sense of what is right and wrong. He is not afraid to endanger himself to make the right thing happen. Few of the other younger characters in One Piece are proven to be as noble as Koby, making Koby appear more responsible and mature than others his age.
