Johnny Depp started his career as a rock musician aged 16 in 1979. When he was 20, he and his band made the move to Los Angeles. Depp’s ex-wife Lori Ann Allison introduced him to actor Nicolas Cage after the band broke up. Cage encouraged him to pursue a career in acting after they became drinking pals.

After reading a biography of James Dean and seeing Rebel Without a Cause, Johnny Depp became interested in acting. A Nightmare on Elm Street audition helped Depp secure an audition with Wes Craven; Depp, who had no acting experience, stated he “wound up performing by mistake”. He was cast as Freddy Krueger’s lover, in part because he drew the attention of Craven’s daughter during the audition process.

To make up for the money his musical profession left unpaid, he continued to be cast in films, even though he stated he had no ambition to be an actor. He was cast in the main part of Thrashin’ in 1986, but the film’s producer overrode the director’s choice, and he ended up in the role. Instead, in Oliver Stone’s 1986 Vietnam War movie Platoon, he had a supporting part as a Vietnamese-speaking private.
