Municipal Development Plan Review 2020 | Red Deer County, AB – Official Website
Red Deer County’s Municipal Development Plan (MDP) is a high level plan that was approved in 2012. It provides guidance for land use development for the entire County. The Municipal Government Act requires municipalities across Alberta to review their MDP regularly, therefore, it was time from administration to undertake a review of the plan.
Current Municipal Development Plan Bylaw No. 2020/20, adopted September 20, 2021
In the fall of 2019, Red Deer County sent out a survey to all agricultural zoned landowners seeking input on key agricultural policies found within the current MDP. We wanted to focus our public input efforts on the agricultural community because Red Deer County’s MDP is largely agriculturally focused and we have had key reoccurring issues regarding development of agricultural lands.

A series of six open houses were held throughout the County in early 2020 in follow-up to the responses received from the survey. This feedback ultimately helped guide our approach for the MDP review. The results of the rural residential survey can be found here:
Red Deer County hosted four public input sessions for residents and landowners to learn about the proposed updates to the MDP in August and September. Thank you to all individuals who came out to our open houses both in person and virtually, your input was greatly appreciated!
A public hearing was held for Bylaw No. 2020/20, a bylaw to adopt the Red Deer County Municipal Development Plan on Tuesday, December 1, 2020. Numerous individuals came out to speak to the proposed plan, thank you to those who attended the hearing as your input is very valuable to this process. County Council decided to close the public hearing in order to allow for another hearing to be scheduled at a time that provides more certainty in relation to meeting restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. County administration scheduled the additional Public Hearing for August 17, 2021.
