Early life
The young actress was born on August 28, 2003, in Houma, Louisiana, USA. Her father is a truck driver whose name is Venjie Wallis. Quvenzhané Wallis’s mother is a teacher known as Qulyndreia while father is called Venjie. The young celebrity has one sister known as Qunyquekya and two brothers, Vejon and Venjie Jr.
Quvenzhané Wallis got her first name Quvenzhané from a combination of her parents’ first names ‘Queven’ and altered Swahili word Jini, which means sprite or fairy. She attended Honduras Elementary School in Houma, Louisiana, USA.

Quvenzhané Wallis started her career at the age of 5. However, for the love of acting, Wallis lied about her age during the auditions of the Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012). The audition minimum entry age was six years. During the auditions, she was chosen amongst 4,000 children who had shown up.
Director Benh Zeitlin’s auditioner confessed that he realized Quvenzhané Wallis’s potential during the auditions; he immediately knew he had got what he wanted. The director was attracted by the young girl’s strong-willed personality, reading prowess, loud screaming voice and the ability to burp on command.
Upon succeeding in the auditions, Quvenzhané Wallis was tasked to play Hushpuppy, an indomitable child prodigy and survivalist. They lived with her dying father in the backwoods bayou squalor of Louisiana. The first premier of the film was at Sundance Film Festival in January 2012. The film won the Grand Jury Prize.
Quvenzhané flew to France in May 2012 for the film’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Her outstanding performance was widely acclaimed, and her director Zeitlin won the Camerad’Or, the festival award for the best first feature film.
In January 2013, when Quvenzhané was only nine, she received the nomination for an Academy Award for the Best Actress in a Leading Role. The nomination made her the youngest nominee for the Best Actress and the third-youngest nominee ever. In addition, the beautiful young actress became the first African-American child actor and the first 21st Century personnel to earn an Oscar nomination.
