As many people may know, blue is a colour commonly used to show sadness. For example, the phrase, “why so blue?”

Of course, this by itself isn’t enough to build this theory, so of course we’ll look to the lyrics.

If you’ve heard the song, you know the majority of the lyrics in the song are nonsense (da be da ba di, you know what I’m talking about) however they are said in an almost monotone fashion, almost as if the person saying them is uninterested or just trying to fill the silence. People with depression often are a bit apathetic about the world, they just stop caring.

However, there are parts of the lyrics that are actual English.

Yo listen up here’s a story

About a little guy that lives in a blue world

And all day and all night

And everything he sees is just blue

These lyrics are from the beginning of the song. These can quickly establish that our protagonist in the song is suffering from depression.

Firstly, he lives in a blue world, and everything he sees is just blue.

I’m sure everyone has heard of the term “rose-tinted glasses” which refers to looking at something (usually the past or memories) with an air of optimism, seeing it as better than it actually is. Well, I think similar is applied here. “Blue-tinted glasses” would be seeing things with more negativity and pessimism, which sounds like it fits a description of depression. You can also see the later, similar line, “and everything is blue for him”. This can also explain why many things are described as being blue in later parts of the song.

Next, is the line “all day and all night” which can refer to the fact that depression doesn’t really go away easily. It usually doesn’t go away in the span of a few hours, it sticks with them all day and all night.

Cause he ain’t got nobody to listen

This line is repeated twice, once towards the beginning and once towards the end. I believe this line refers to how people suffering from depression (and really mental illness in general) don’t have or don’t think they have people to turn to to help them due to the stigma against mental illness.

I have a blue house with a blue window

Ever heard the expression “eyes are the windows to the soul”? Well, this line is a metaphor for our protagonist. The house is him – it is his being containing everything about him. Everything about him is described as blue – being sad, depressed.

The blue windows represent how someone who looks at our protagonist will look into their soul or their thoughts and see themselves the depression our protagonist is facing.

I have a girlfriend and she is so blue

I believe that this line refers to how people suffering from mental illness can drag down some of the people around them, that love them. The people that love them can experience feelings of despair (if that’s an accurate way to describe it) as they see their efforts to help don’t cause much improvement or they just get dragged down into the spiral with their loved one.

Blue are words I say and what I think

Blue are the feelings that live inside me

These ones are more obvious and explicit. I don’t think I need to really explain them.

I know there’s not much for me to go on just due to how the song is. But I do believe that the song is at least somewhat related to depression.
