[REVIEW] CATHY DOLL ‘AQUA SUN’ BODY SUN SERUM

It is already known that sun protection is a very important part of skin care.  Beauty and skin care vloggers always tell us to always use an SPF product everyday. But the question is, which of the many sunscreen/sunblock products available in the market should we use?  As I was watching a beauty influencer’s vlog,  there’s one thing she said that got stucked in my head.  “Once you found the spf product that you like, stick to it. If you like the product, you will be using it everyday. You won’t be “forced” to do it. ”  Now, I can finally say that I have found the sunscreen product that I really like.  I have tried several products before but they all have a few things in common: heavy, sticky, strong chemical smell, and white cast.

It’s the AQUA SUN NON-GREASY BODY SUN SERUM from CATHY DOLL.  It has UVA & UVB protection,  with SPF 50 PA+++.  Those properties are also seen and common in other sunscreen products available in the market.  What made me purchase this was when I saw the word “serum” on it.  Most SPF products are in the form of lotion,  and those are the ones that are very heavy/thick and leave a white cast.  I have tried one brand in gel form, but that one left a sort of oily feel on my already oily face.  Yes,  it didn’t leave a white cast,  but it felt uncomfortable due to the oily feel.  I purchased this one from Cathy Doll from SM Official shop in Shopee for Php199.00, 50ml.

*this bottle is almost running out of contents as I have been using it for more than a month now*

When I first opened it,  it was a white cream so I was kinda disappointed coz I was expecting a “serum” consistency.  But I was surprised when I tried it at the back of my palm and started rubbing it.  As I was rubbing it, it slowly turns into a transparent watery consistency which gets absorbed quickly on the skin.  Give it a few seconds after getting absorbed by the skin and it feels like nothing was applied on it.  As in NOTHING!  NON-GREASY INDEED!  *Non-greasy, but not feeling dry. It feels smooth and soft. It also contains Niacinamide, so there’s the moisturizing/hydrating factor  😉  *

the arrow is pointing on the water droplet formed after some rubbing of the white cream. non-greasy feel after the product has been absorbed by the skinHere’s a video I took as a sample  🙂

And because it “turns into water” as you rub it,  there’s definitely NO WHITE CAST! Just what I was looking for!  Plus it doesn’t have a strong chemical scent,  unlike the typical sunblock lotions. A very big thumbs up for that!! The label says it’s a “body sun serum” but I use it on my face.  I use a different sunscreen for the rest of my body.

What I love:

  • SPF 50, PA+++
  • UVA & UVB Protection
  • Non-greasy
  • No white cast
  • Light formulation
  • From cream to water
  • No strong chemical smell
  • NIACINAMIDE is 5th on the ingredient list! 😍
  • Has hydrolyzed collagen👍
  • Contains a number of plant and root oils and extracts, such as grape seed oil, fig fruit extract, licorice root extract, rosemary leaf extract, centella asiatica extract and many others.

I can’t really review on the SPF function — on how long it will really take before my skin burns —  because I really don’t get that much sun exposure these days as I am just staying at home (quarantine/lockdown…  huhu 😥  )  — work from home.  But just because we just stay at home,  we won’t need to apply sunscreen.  There are still some rays of the sun that gets through physical barriers (buildings,  etc), hence,  we still need that sun protection to prevent pre-mature skin aging.

I disregarded the importance of using sun protection on my skin in my student days,  and even on my office work days.  I only bought sunblock lotions before when there’s a scheduled out of town trip,  particularly going to the beach/swimming.  I didn’t really use sunscreen on a daily basis.  I thought that using an umbrella when under the hot sun is enough.  It’s only now that I am in my early to mid-30s that I started to appreciate and learn the importance of such products.  So that’s a piece of advice to everyone.  Protect your skin,  not just the face but the entire body,  from the sun before you regret it later.   😉   Find the kind of product that you will really like.   In that case,  you will be very willing to use it every single day ^_^
