Netflix’s hit family superhero movie We Can Be Heroes doesn’t have a sequel yet, but there have been some promising updates on the development of We Can Be Heroes 2. Written and directed by Spy Kids creator Robert Rodriguez, We Can Be Heroes revolves around the world’s superheroes being abducted by alien invaders, and their superpowered children stepping up to the plate to save the day. The movie was praised for evoking the warm, nostalgic feel of a Saturday morning cartoon, and for the impressive work of its ensemble cast of lovable actors.

Since the ending of We Can Be Heroes leaves the door open for sequels and the movie was a huge hit with viewers on Netflix, discussions of a potential sequel quickly followed the film’s Christmas 2020 release. As with any fictional universe full of superheroes with a disparate range of powers and enemies, there are plenty of opportunities to expand We Can Be Heroes into a franchise. In the years since Rodriguez’s all-star superhero adventure arrived on Netflix, there have been some exciting updates on We Can Be Heroes 2.

In an interview with Collider in 2021, Rodriguez said that he would be returning to direct We Can Be Heroes 2 and that shooting would take place sometime in 2022. Since there was no news about production throughout 2022, filming has presumably been delayed. This delay might have been to accommodate the busy schedules of the star-studded cast, or the busy schedule of Rodriguez himself. In the years since he made We Can Be Heroes, Rodriguez has worked on Hypnotic, The Book of Boba Fett, and the Billie Eilish concert film Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles, and he’s making Spy Kids: Armageddon for Netflix.

We Can Be Heroes 2 Confirmed

Netflix has officially confirmed development of a sequel to We Can Be Heroes (via Variety) after the first film became one of the streaming service’s biggest holiday hits of 2020. Rodriguez told Collider that Netflix was “shocked” by how well We Can Be Heroes performed on its platform. They called it “unstoppable” as it scored some of the highest repeat viewing numbers of any Netflix property, as kids rewatch it before and after school. Rodriguez added that Netflix had asked him for “a series of films,” so the We Can Be Heroes franchise probably won’t stop at just one sequel; they’ll greenlight as many as Rodriguez is willing to make.

Since filming hasn’t begun yet, Netflix hasn’t announced a release date for We Can Be Heroes 2. But it is, at the very least, prepped for production. The fact that Rodriguez was ready to get the cameras rolling in 2022 suggests that the script is complete and just waiting for everyone’s schedules to line up. Rodriguez is known for his quick turnarounds on movie projects. If he makes We Can Be Heroes 2 his next project after his 2023 sci-fi thriller Hypnotic, then it could arrive in late 2024. If he tackles Spy Kids: Armageddon first, then We Can Be Heroes 2 might have to wait until 2025.

We Can Be Heroes 2 Cast

While there’s been no official confirmation about which actors from the We Can Be Heroes cast will return for the sequel, it’s easy to speculate. Since she was the lead protagonist of the first movie, YaYa Gosselin will almost certainly reprise her role as the powerless Missy Moreno, who makes the biggest difference in spite of her lack of special abilities. All the other child actors would be expected to return: Andy Walken as Wheels, Isaiah Russell-Bailey as Rewind, Akira Akbar as Fast Forward, Lyon Daniels as Noodles, Nathan Blair as Wild Card, Lotus Blossom as A Capella, Dylan Henry Lau as Slo-Mo, and Andrew Diaz as Facemaker.

Hala Finley’s Ojo and Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ Ms. Granada will probably return after the first film’s twist ending. Vivien Lyra Blair might get an expanded role in We Can Be Heroes 2 as Guppy, Sharkboy and Lavagirl’s youngest daughter, because Blair’s turn as a young Leia Organa in the Obi-Wan Kenobi streaming series has made her a much bigger star in the interim. As for Sharkboy and Lavagirl themselves, Taylor Dooley will likely return as Lavagirl. Sharkboy was played by J.J. Dashnaw in a silent cameo in the first film due to original actor Taylor Lautner being unavailable; hopefully, Lautner will be available for We Can Be Heroes 2.

Rodriguez said in the Collider interview that many of the adult actors enjoyed working on We Can Be Heroes just as much as their young co-stars, because “most of the adults in the cast had kids, too, that couldn’t watch any of their movies.” We Can Be Heroes gave them a chance to share one of their projects with their own children. This could mean the return of Boyd Holbrook as Miracle Guy, Christian Slater as Tech-No, Sung Kang as Blinding Fast, Haley Reinhart as Ms. Vox, J. Quinton Johnson as Crimson Legend, Brittany Perry-Russell as Red Lightning Fury, Jamie Perez as Invisi Girl, and Brently Heilbron as Crushing Low.

Will Pedro Pascal Return For We Can Be Heroes 2?

Pedro Pascal with the other superheroes in We Can Be Heroes

Whether Pedro Pascal returns in We Can Be Heroes 2 as Missy’s dad Marcus, a master swordsman with magnetic powers that keep his blades in his hands at all times, will depend on his schedule. Pascal is one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood right now. He recently signed on to appear in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel (via Deadline) and he’s also working on Ethan Coen’s road trip comedy Drive-Away Dolls and Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s drama Freaky Tales. The biggest hurdle to Pascal’s potential appearance in We Can Be Heroes 2 will probably be his TV commitments.

Pascal is currently committed to playing lead roles in two hit TV shows: Joel Miller in The Last of Us and the title character in The Mandalorian. There is a slim chance that these roles won’t conflict with the filming schedule for We Can Be Heroes 2. The Mandalorian doesn’t require Pascal to be on set for every one of his scenes. He just provides Din Djarin’s voice while stand-ins handle most of his on-set appearances. On top of that, Pascal’s Last of Us role will likely be reduced in season 2 as the show tackles the second game, which focuses more on Ellie than Joel.

We Can Be Heroes 2 Story Details

Lavagirl using her powers in We Can Be Heroes

There’s no official plot synopsis for We Can Be Heroes 2, but the first movie did set up a sequel story. In the twist ending of We Can Be Heroes, Ojo revealed that she was the Supreme Commander and Queen of the aliens, and that the whole extra-terrestrial invasion was faked as a training exercise for the kids to join the Heroics. Following this twist, the superpowered kids will likely join their parents in the Heroics line-up. Whereas the first movie saw the kids trying to save their parents from alien invaders, We Can Be Heroes 2 could see the parents and their children fighting supervillains side-by-side.

Rodriguez could follow the usual sequel formula with his follow-up to We Can Be Heroes. A lot of the best sequels flip the original movie’s premise on its head. Spider-Man 2 took away Peter Parker’s superpowers; Terminator 2: Judgment Day turned the T-800 from a relentless killer into a relentless protector; Top Gun: Maverick turned Pete Mitchell from a roguish student into a roguish teacher. After We Can Be Heroes revolved around the kids’ efforts to save their parents, We Can Be Heroes 2 might revolve around the parents’ efforts to save their kids.
