It is commonly used in informal communication.
More formal and appropriate expressions for the work place are usually used. For instance: “I would be very grateful if you could help me with this project. I would really appreciate it if you could fix my printer.
However, you could use it at the end of a formal letter when you require or are asking the recipient to take some course of action. Then you could end with: “Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated”
When used with an ironic tone, it can be sarcastic. For instance: “Your silence is greatly appreciated”.
