Who is Shisui Uchiha? Background, Abilities, Teams, Clans, Powers
Shisui was born in the renowned Uchiha clan. Very little is known about his lineage other than the fact that he was the sole breadwinner for a family of three. His father was bedridden and ill as he lost a leg in the last war which caused the decline in his health. At some point, his father even stopped recognizing him.
Although it brought him great sorrow, he acknowledged that everybody dies someday and was prepared for his father’s passing, believing that it might be the best thing for his father. It is also stated that he is a descendent of Kagami Uchiha, a renowned jonin who was a member of Second HokageTobirama Senju’s Escort Unit.
While the Third Great Ninja War was raging, consuming many lives on the battlefield, Shisui graduated from the Hidden Leaf Ninja Academy and became a genin. Following his graduation, he was assigned to a genin squad and started completing the assigned missions, gaining a name for himself along the way. He became renowned as Shisui of the Body Flicker or Shisui: The Teleporter for his mastery of the Body Flicker Technique.
At the ripe age of just seven years old, Shisui witnessed his friend and comrade die in battle. Due to the dire situation, he was helpless at that moment and couldn’t do anything other than watch his friend die in front of him. This inflicted great trauma on the young boy and he awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan when he was seven years old. Although it is not stated explicitly, Shisui is probably the youngest member of the Uchiha Clan to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan. When exactly he awakened his Sharingan and what caused its awakening is not stated in the series.
A year after this traumatizing incident, Shisui met five-year-old Itachi Uchiha, training in the woods. He became fond of young Itachi and started spending time with him. He even trained with him from time to time, teaching Itachi his techniques. After some time, approximately 2 years later, he was promoted to the rank of a Jonin. He became the captain of Team Shisui.
As time passed on, shinobi from the Five Great Nations started fearing Shisui. During a mission, Ao of the Hidden Mist Village sensed Shisui’s presence on the battlefield and retreated with his squad as he knew that they did not stand a chance against him.
The Uchiha clan was not satisfied with their status in the village. The Uchiha clan felt that they were not trusted by the village higher-ups, which worsened when they were suspected to be the proprietor of the Nine-Tails Attack on the village. They were forced to relocate further away from the village.
As their status deteriorated, they became angrier with the village and started planning a coup d’état to seize power in the village. Shisui was not on board with this development and started looking for ways to avoid a clash between the clan and the village. He wanted to resolve this issue peacefully without any bloodshed.
After Itachi became a member of Anbu Black Ops, he became the Uchiha clan’s pipeline in the Hidden Leaf’s hierarchy and was tasked to spy on the higher-ups for the clan. Little did they know that Itachi was acting as a double agent and was spying on the clan for the village as well. After the clan noticed some odd behavior in Itachi, Shisui was assigned to track and keep an eye on Itachi from the Hidden Leaf Military Police Force.
Shisui sympathized with Itachi, as he was also against a coup but he was struggling to find a way to resolve this peacefully. On the other hand, the clan members grew angrier for being suspected to be involved in the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox’s attack on the village. As the situation grew dire, he trusted Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village, and informed him about the situation at hand. Being the descendent of Kagami Uchiha, Hiruzen’s former trusted teammate, he assigned Shisui as a spy and tasked him to track the clan’s movements. With this new development, Shisui started acting as a double agent as well.
As he witnessed how the situation unfolded, he realized that he wouldn’t be able to deter the Uchiha clan members from their plan to launch a coup. Shisui was greatly concerned about the consequences the coup would cause and how it would affect the village and its citizens. As a last resort, he decided to use his Kotoamatsukami on Fugaku Uchiha, the leader of the Uchiha Clan, during one of their clan meetings and make him abandon the notion of going to war against the village.
Although Hiruzen supported his decision as there was no other way to end this peacefully, Danzo Shimura did not approve of this. Danzo believed that simply manipulating the clan’s leader would not suffice and that they needed to eliminate the clan. Danzo feared that Shisui would hit Kotoamatsukami on village higher-ups and control them. Danzo decided to steal Shisui’s eyes and use them to protect the village in his own twisted way.
While Shisui was preparing for his action, he was attacked by Danzo. Shisui effortlessly countered Danzo and subdued him. To Shisui’s surprise, Danzo used Izanagi, a Forbidden Jutsu, and caught him off guard. He performed Izanagi with one of the Sharingans in his possession and stole Shisui’s right eye. Shisui realized that the situation is not in his favor and managed to escape. Danzo’s men started pursuing to retrieve his left eye as well.
Shisui managed to shake off his pursuers and escaped. He realized his inability to stop the coup. He knew that Danzo would not stop coming after his other eye and that he could not return to the clan in this state as it would fuel their anger against the village. He then decided to entrust everything to his best friend, Itachi.
He entrusted his left eye to Itachi and committed suicide by jumping off a cliff into the Naka River. He entrusted Itachi to protect the village and not let the Uchiha name be sullied because of the actions of some. He also hoped to awaken Itachi’s Mangekyo by his death, which he succeeded in. Shisui jumped off the cliff and died with a smile on his face.
Shisui wrote a suicide note and stated that he could not go through with the coup, which forced him to commit suicide. He even made it seem like he crushed his eyes while jumping off the cliff to avoid conflict over his eyes within the clan. He even went as far as to erase his body’s existence and left no corpse behind due to which Kabuto Yakushi was not able to reincarnate him in the Fourth Great Ninja War.
