Alaska Holly – Ilex Aquifolium Alaska

ILEX AQUAFOLIUM ALASKA – Alaska Holly

Characteristics

Ilex aquifolium Alaska is one of the most winter hardy cultivars of the Common Holly. It is a relatively small and slender variety of holly which makes it very suitable in narrow hedges. The sharp dentate, spiny leaves are narrower, more sinuate and more dentate than those of the species.

Where to grow

It is a truly hardy tree, capable of surviving in most conditions except where it is extremely wet.

Did you know?

Alaska is a self-pollinating female form which bears many red berries. However, the number of berries will be larger when a male Holly is present. It was introduced around 1960 by H. and D. Nissen from Wuppertal in Germany.
